About this role

About the Department

Reporting to the System Administrator, the Junior System Administrator helps manage, monitor, and maintain the university’s computing environment (on-premise and cloud-based). 

  • Assists in administering Windows server infrastructure, including physical, virtual and cloud-based systems.
  • Monitors multiple environments on various servers and ensures proper operation.
  • Assists in management of Directory Services, including user account management and data access management.
  • Acts as back up to the System Administrator.
  • Monitors the status and operations of data center infrastructure, including related network systems, console systems and peripheral equipment.
  • Assists in managing storage infrastructure.
  • Works with developers to troubleshoot problems on servers in all environments.
  • Assists with integration of new code into production systems.
  • Monitors Help Desk ticket-tracking system and responds as necessary.
  • Assists in troubleshooting and restoring services by analyzing, identifying and diagnosing faults using established processes and procedures.
  • Provides assistance and escalation when necessary.
  • Consults with project managers, analysts, programmers, administrators and other IT professionals on various issues, including system design, limitations and capabilities, performance requirements, interfaces and maintenance.
  • Documents system changes and provides written and oral reports when requested.
  • Assists in the preparation of technical documentation and system diagrams.
  • Researches new products and technologies and recommends purchases.
  • Attends training and performs self-study to keep expertise current.

Position Duties

  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology or related field and two years of experience or bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field.
  • Proficiency with Windows environments.
  • Experience managing virtual and cloud-based systems.
  • Knowledge of information technology systems analysis, design, testing and maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, operating systems, networking, and other IT tools and resources.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to apply critical thinking skills to resolve moderately complex problems.
  • Ability to follow technical directions.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Effective decision-making skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff and students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with VMware.
  • Experience in an institution of higher education.
  • Experience responding to cyber security incidents.

Other Qualifications

Travel/Overtime Requirements: The employee assigned to this position is expected to work a 7-1/2 hour shift, Monday through Friday. In addition, employee is expected to work outside regular business hours and on weekends for planned system maintenance or emergencies as necessary. 

Annual Salary/Hiring Range: $61,198 - $70,000; actual salary depends on qualifications.
