About the Department

The Office of Juvenile Justice is seeking a decisive, highly disciplined Tactical Response Captain to support tactical operations and safety within a secure-care environment for adjudicated youth. This leadership role is ideal for someone who remains calm under pressure, communicates clearly, and ensures that tactical teams operate with precision and consistency.

As a Tactical Response Captain, you’ll provide daily direction to tactical officers, reinforce safety expectations, and help maintain a secure, structured environment across the facility. You’ll support the Tactical Response Major, contribute to operational readiness, and help ensure that tactical practices align with agency standards and major-incident procedures. This position requires strong judgment, professionalism, and the ability to lead confidently in fast-moving situations.

Position Duties

Possession of a high school diploma or GED or one year of experience in any field plus:

Three years of experience in a residential, correctional, behavioral health, or group home setting with responsibility for one or more of the following: rehabilitation of delinquent youth, clinical care, custody, or security; OR

Three years of experience in Probation and Parole.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Job Duties:

• Leads tactical response operations — supervises tactical officers, responds to alarms, and supports statewide, regional, and local tactical missions.

• Conducts security inspections — performs rounds, checks gates/windows/exits, and inspects tactical gear to ensure operational readiness.

• Coordinates incident response — manages disturbances, documents tactical decisions, and maintains shared situational awareness across command staff.

• Supports youth movement and facility safety — oversees youth movement, conducts searches, enforces contraband-control policies, and ensures required documentation is completed.

• Implements tactical policies — briefs staff on updates, interprets strategic directives, and ensures alignment with major-incident procedures.

• Provides leadership coverage — performs duties of the Tactical Response Major in their absence and maintains 24-hour on-call readiness.

• Performs additional duties — completes tasks assigned based on agency needs.
