This K-9 Handler Position Serves the Mid-State Region: Abbeville, Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Clarendon, Edgefield, Greenwood, Hampton, Kershaw, Laurens, Lee, Lexington, McCormick, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda, and Sumter counties.


Patrols and enforces the South Carolina (SC) Motor Vehicle Laws. Investigates traffic collisions as needed on all streets and highways of South Carolina. Enforces other criminal laws of the State with emphasis on, but not limited to, unlawful narcotics, weapon violations, fugitive apprehension and/or recovery of stolen vehicles. Detailed report writing to include instances that arise during normal patrol duties as well as those involving a lengthy criminal investigation. Provides guidance and direction to State Troopers across the state in the performance of their duties. Directs canine in attempts to detect controlled substances and/or for tracking purposes. Trains and cares for assigned patrol canine on a daily basis. 

Patrols roadways of the State to detect violations of SC Motor Vehicle laws and enforcement of State laws. Conducts searches based on reasonable suspicion and probable cause particularly as it pertains to transportation and possession of illegal narcotics, weapons, fugitives, and stolen vehicles. Investigates vehicle collisions on roadways to determine the cause of collisions through complex investigation techniques.

Responsible for daily, weekly, monthly reports, collision investigation, citations, warrants and other criminal reports. Trooper will prosecute Magistrate/Circuit court cases from those documents and will serve as a prosecuting witness in State and Federal courts if called upon to do so.

Responsible for maintaining all equipment issued by the Department or received for the Department. Accountable for public funds, including bond money, seized currencies and items in the suspect(s) possession.

Directs assigned canine in attempts to locate controlled substances in dwellings, vehicles, structures, and other areas as needed. Maintains training sessions with canine and is responsible for the care of canine and equipment assigned with these responsibilities. Assists other agencies with canine detection. Utilizes canine in ground tracking situations as they arise.

Required to be trained in and certified in Law Enforcement Scientific procedures, certified to administer Breath Tests (BA and Data Master), certified in the operation of speed detection devices, and competently utilize enforcement speed detection devices, including specialized radars such as Doppler Radar, LIDAR, and any other scientific equipment available.


Position Duties

State Minimum Requirements:   A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.

Agency Minimum Requirements: Must have at least a high school diploma as well as the following additional requirements: 

INTERVIEW PANEL – Troop 8 ACE Team will schedule and conduct interviews of the candidates applying for this LATERAL transfer position on a date to be determined. 

TIME IN GRADE – Applicant must have a minimum of three (3) years of Certified Law Enforcement Service Time as defined by SCDPS policy, and hold the rank of SCHP Senior Trooper, Lance Corporal or Master Trooper.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION – Any individual who is currently serving a suspension for disciplinary reasons or pending the outcome of an investigation shall be considered ineligible to participate in the process. Any individual who has been involuntarily demoted during the preceding six (6) months of the vacancy closing shall be considered ineligible to participate in the application and selection process.

EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a “Performance Improvement Plan” (PIP), formerly known as a “Warning Notice of Substandard Performance,” during the 12 months preceding the closing date of this vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

PROBATIONARY/TRIAL PERIOD – Any individual serving a probationary period shall be ineligible to participate in the process.

RESIDENCY – Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy 300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within four (4) months of the effective date of the LATERAL reassignment. SCDPS Policy #300.47 IV. Residency Regulations D. 2. Troopers assigned to a specialized Troop or Unit shall establish a residence within the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility or, if residing outside of the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility, at a location that will allow them to respond to the county in which their assigned Troop or Unit office is located within 45 minutes. IV.C. Troop/Unit/Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment. 

The knowledge skills and abilities needed are normally acquired through Patrol Training School. Must be able to give guidance to Troopers & Troopers First Class in departmental rules, regulations and laws pertaining to the job.  Must have the ability to deal firmly but courteously with the general public and react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Must maintain breath analyst, radar technician and annual K-9 certifications, and attend schools to increase knowledge of drug interdiction.

Other Qualifications

K-9 Handler Training will be conducted in-house with Troop 8 K-9 Instructor.

Special K-9 Housing Requirements will be discussed during interview process.

The candidate is under general supervision of the region supervisor. Latitude is allowed for independent discretion. The physical requirements include but are not limited to walking, sitting, running, lifting, wrestling and firing a weapon.

Candidate will work special assignments that require overnight travel.
