Light Equipment Operator (LEO) for Network Underground Services (NUS) – Georgia Statewide
Georgia Power's Network Underground Services (NUS) plays an integral part in Georgia's economy. NUS provides construction & maintenance services for the underground network electrical systems located in Metro Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah, Macon, Columbus, Athens, Valdosta and other spot Network Systems throughout Georgia. We provide a highly reliable electric service to High Profile Customers such as high-rise commercial and residential buildings, hospitals, government agencies and large businesses that are located within our service territory across the state. Our Light Equipment Operator (LEO) positions are based out of Atlanta. All candidates must be available to work within a certain distance of their assigned operating headquarters (upon hire). No relocation assistance is available.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The classification of Light Equipment Operator (LEO) shall operate the following equipment:
- All cranes with lifting capacity of less than 35 tons. Lifting capacity shall be determined per the equipment manufacturer’s specification.
- Derrick trucks as needed.
- Truck and trailer combinations.
- Backhoes, Excavators, Skid Steers and Tractors equipped with light attachments for digging, grading, material staging, hydraulic breakers, etc.
- Pullers and/or tensioners, winch trucks and reel handling equipment
- Any equipment operated by employees in classifications below LEO
Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Candidates must have a basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
- Minimum of 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military and/or electrical experience is preferred.
- Experience working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, and/or farming is a plus.
- Candidates who have Network Underground experience with the installation & construction of the infrastructure are strongly desired.
- Candidates who have military experience is a plus.

- Candidate must be able to work on our system in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults & tunnels where entry requires access by ladders plus the ability to work in deep excavations requiring proper shoring is required.

- Able to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions and elements.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a team environment.
Pre-Employment Tasks
The pre-employment testing will include, but not limited to, the following and will require up to one day of evaluations at a location in Atlanta, GA. Lunch will be provided on the day of evaluation. There is no compensation for the pre-employment process and other travel expenses are the responsibility of the candidate.

Other Requirements
Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
- All candidates who are invited for an interview are required to provide the following:
- Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) - Class A
- Candidates with out-of-state CDLs will have a grace period of 60 days to obtain a Georgia CDL Class A license
- Prior to being invited to an interview, candidates must pass a pre-employment written exam (CAST Test). The CAST test includes Graphic Arithmetic, Mathematical usage, Mechanical Concepts and Reading Comprehension.

- Because of the nature of our work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must CURRENTLY weigh (and maintain their body weight) AT or BELOW 270 pounds -fully dressed including steel-toed work boots and hardhat.
- Due to the physical demands of this position, candidates must be able to lift and drag equipment weighing 50-pounds or more.
- Candidates must be able to frequently work in extreme weather conditions throughout the entire year. All climatic conditions will be experienced in these positions (heat, cold, rain, snow/ice, etc.).
- Candidates must be available for "call out" duties which will require being available and accessible in times of Storm emergencies at least 50% of the times requested, including overnight and out of state travel. This could also include working evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
- A thorough background check and DOT drug screen will be conducted prior to employment (after a job offer is extended). In addition, you must successfully meet requirements for a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by our company physician.
- Candidates will also be required to take a POET OFFER EMPLOYEEMENT TEST (POET)
Additional Information
Pay: This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between GPC and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay for ALL NEW HIRES is $6,954/month or approximately $40.12/hour. Light Equipment Operator candidates who receive job offers will be hired at this rate, regardless of experience/skills. This rate is non-negotiable.
This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle. The following will be required if you are selected for this position:
- Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).
- Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
- Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record
