What you'll do:

The Lumberyard Loader / Puller (Material Handler) supports daily yard, warehouse, and delivery operations by accurately pulling, staging, banding, loading, and verifying building materials for customer deliveries and intercompany transfers. This role plays a critical part in ensuring order accuracy, maintaining safe operations, and supporting efficient workflow by following standardized pulling, loading, and staging procedures. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, dependable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced outdoor environment while operating forklifts and handling heavy building materials.

 

Material Pulling & Order Preparation

  • Pick, pull, and prepare lumber, hardware, siding, exterior products, sheet goods, and other building materials using work orders and pick tickets
  • Verify product quantities and accurately record pulled quantities on work orders or pick tickets
  • Pull materials using standardized order sequencing procedures to ensure efficient workflow
  • Work one rack or order at a time to maintain order accuracy and minimize errors
  • Inspect pulled materials for damage, quality, shortages, or discrepancies before staging
  • Notify Yard Lead or management of inventory discrepancies or damaged materials

Staging & Load Preparation

  • Stage completed orders in designated staging areas according to delivery schedules and operational priorities
  • Band, wrap, label, and organize completed orders for shipment
  • Prepare sheet goods by wrapping and securing materials to prevent damage during transport
  • Mark completed bundles using approved identification methods
  • Verify completed orders prior to release for loading
  • Obtain required approval from Yard Lead or designated personnel before final staging

Loading & Delivery Support

  • Load delivery vehicles safely using approved loading procedures
  • Verify all materials, hardware, and associated products are included with each shipment
  • Position loads to maximize transportation safety and product protection
  • Assist drivers during loading operations and ensure trucks are fully loaded prior to departure
  • Follow established loading sequences and secure materials to minimize damage during transportation

Equipment Operation

  • Perform pre-operation inspections of forklifts and material handling equipment before each shift
  • Safely operate forklifts and other material handling equipment in accordance with company procedures
  • Report equipment damage, maintenance concerns, or safety issues immediately
  • Maintain forklifts and equipment in clean operating condition
  • Perform routine housekeeping and equipment cleaning, including scheduled equipment washing as required

Yard Operations

  • Assist with unloading inbound materials and organizing inventory within designated storage locations
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe yard, warehouse, staging, and loading areas
  • Support inventory organization and material flow throughout the facility
  • Follow standardized yard operating procedures established by management
  • Support additional warehouse and yard activities as business needs require

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, PPE requirements, and safe operating procedures
  • Promote a safety-first culture by identifying and reporting hazards or unsafe conditions
  • Operate forklifts and material handling equipment safely at all times
  • Maintain clean work areas free of debris and potential hazards
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

What you'll bring:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Valid forklift certification or ability to obtain certification within the first 30 days of employment
  • Previous experience in lumberyards, building materials distribution, warehouse operations, freight handling, or industrial material handling
  • Experience operating forklifts and loading building materials
  • Familiarity with banding equipment, sheet-good wrapping, and outdoor yard operations
  • OSHA 10 certification or equivalent safety training is a plus
  • Experience working with construction materials, lumber, siding, roofing products, or related building products preferred
  • Work is performed primarily in outdoor yard and warehouse environments
  • Frequent exposure to changing weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and seasonal temperatures
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout an 8-hour shift
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, move, and position building materials weighing 50 pounds or more using proper lifting techniques or mechanical assistance
  • Frequent operation of forklifts and material handling equipment
  • Exposure to moving equipment, delivery vehicles, and active loading operations
  • May require overtime, early mornings, or weekend work based on operational needs
