Human Resources announces an opening for Custodian III, full-time, 12-months, 2nd shift; Grade M-04 position at Innovation Elementary School. Serves as lead night custodian; Supervises and performs moderate and heavy cleaning tasks in school buildings or certain centers on an assigned shift, usually the evening/night or weekend shift (Wednesday to Sunday, specifics will be discussed during interview). The work involves general custodial duties, maintaining building security at night, opening and locking-up building and being on call to respond to break-ins and emergencies. NOTE regarding work schedule/shift assignment: The work schedule is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Incumbents in this class are hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (The following may not include all duties performed; not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated): Serve as lead night custodian, assigning and monitoring the work of lower level custodians; train, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates and participate in all phases of building cleaning activities. Instructs subordinates and sets expected levels of performance in cleaning, building and grounds maintenance, proper use of equipment,
materials and supplies, and other routines. Ensure that prescribed maintenance standards are maintained with respect to equipment, property, and grounds. Participate in snow removal, lawn moving: including all other cleaning, preventative and routine maintenance activities. Ensure that proper safety and security precautions are observed; locks and unlocks doors, check the security of the building and grounds, activates the alarm system. Arranges/rearranges rooms for community activities and assists school and community groups that utilize the building. Transports and empties large trash containers into outdoors units. Moves and transports furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, and other supplies, manually or with mechanical assistance; loads and unloads trucks; lowers flags. Other duties as assigned. NOTE HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS: Employee is exposed to potential chemical hazards and toxic substances when using cleaning liquids, solvents and solutions, to potential biological hazards when cleaning restrooms, and to potential physical hazards when operating custodian equipment. Work also exposes employee to dust, fumes and occasionally to adverse weather conditions. Work requires the frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety procedures.
EXPERIENCE:
Good knowledge of methods, materials, and practices used in custodial work and the proper use and care of equipment. Thorough knowledge of the means of protecting self and others from potential hazard from exposure to blood born pathogens, excrement and other body fluids, and of safe effective cleaning and disposal methods. Skill in the use of a floor buffing, carpet shampooer and general building maintenance tools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or completion of GED and considerable experience in public building custodial work, some of which shall have been at the Custodian II level; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform job responsibilities. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions, and to maintain records and prepare routine reports. Ability to interact effectively with administrators, staff members, representatives from county organizations and members of the community. Able to adjust hours as needed (schedule changes during the summer months). Must be screened and approved by our Plant Operations Office administrator.
SALARY:
Salary range based upon 25/26 pay plan. Newly hired employees with previous experience in their field may receive salary credit for up to five years of experience related to the job being filled.
