Position Title: Accounting Intern
Department: Accounting Department Location: 501 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV 25301 - City Hall Room 202 Number of open positions: 1 Anticipated Start Date: 6/8/26 End Date: 7/31/26 Hours per Week: Up to 35 hours per week Business/Work Hours: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (½ hour unpaid lunch) Pay Rate: $13.00/hour
General Description:
This position is part of the Mayor's Summer Youth Jobs Program for individuals aged 16-20 years old. Employment dates are June 8, 2026, through July 31, 2026, with potential extensions based on availability and departmental needs. This position works under close supervision and performs duties according to established procedures.
General Responsibilities, Tasks, and Projects
- Digitize prior year invoice documents and file them in the current ERP system
- Assist with data entry and maintaining accounting records
- Support staff with special projects and research assignments
- Perform other duties as assigned by the City Auditor
Candidate Requirements
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 20
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks
- Physical ability to bend, stoop, and lift up to 20 pounds
Dress Code
Employees are expected to maintain a business casual appearance. Acceptable attire includes:
- Slacks, khakis, collared shirts, blouses, and closed-toe shoes
- Not permitted: Shorts, t-shirts, athletic wear, flip-flops, or overly casual items
- Employees should present a neat and professional appearance at all times

Additional Qualifications:
- Must have the ability to provide documentation verifying legal work status.
- Ability to read and speak the English language proficiently in order to communicate and interact with others; to understand and interpret safety instructions; and to respond to internal and external inquiries.
- Ability to understand and comply with City and departmental guidelines, policies, procedures and expectations.
