Medical Laboratory Scientist

Chenega Services and Federal Solutions, LLC., a Chenega Professional Services’ company, is looking for a Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform complex clinical pathology laboratory testing and support USAMRIID's Animal Aerobiology Team (AAT) mission. The position serves as a primary resource supporting animal clinical pathology operations, laboratory testing, quality assurance and quality control programs, equipment maintenance, laboratory compliance, and research activities. The incumbent independently performs clinical pathology laboratory functions, supports research protocols, develops and maintains laboratory documentation, assists with training personnel, and operates within BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 containment environments while ensuring compliance with GLP requirements, ASVCP quality guidelines, and applicable USAMRIID procedures.

• Serve as a Medical Laboratory Scientist performing and overseeing AAT animal clinical pathology operations as the primary point of contact supporting USAMRIID research programs and NHP colony management testing.
• Perform microbiological, biological, and biochemical examinations on clinical and environmental specimens for the detection and identification of microbial agents of disease.
• Perform hematology, clinical chemistry, coagulation testing, blood smear preparation, urinalysis, and sediment preparation procedures.
• Provide oversight and review of animal clinical pathology test results and laboratory procedures.
• Evaluate, interpret, document, and maintain laboratory test results and quality control data in accordance with GLP requirements and ASVCP quality guidelines.
• Perform quality assurance, quality control, equipment validation, equipment maintenance, and associated documentation activities for animal clinical pathology laboratory operations.
• Identify testing anomalies, investigate quality control issues, determine root causes, implement corrective actions, and maintain required documentation.
• Assist with research, planning, evaluation, and implementation of testing methods and procedures.
• Assist with training laboratory personnel and related staff.
• Support laboratory audits, inspections, and regulatory compliance activities.
• Maintain laboratory workspaces, equipment, inventories, supplies, and associated documentation.
• Obtain supply and equipment quotes and coordinate procurement support activities as requested.
• Create, maintain, and update laboratory documentation, SOPs, logs, inventory records, and related paperwork required for laboratory operations.
• Assist in preparing technical reports, SOPs, manuscripts, and supporting documentation related to research activities.
• Participate in meetings and provide technical presentations related to assigned responsibilities.
• Generate laboratory summaries, reports, and supporting documentation as required.
• Provide technical information and laboratory support to research scientists and laboratory animal veterinarians.
• Report safety concerns, procedural deviations, and non-compliance observations in accordance with applicable guidance and regulations.
• Support animal research protocols through sample processing, aliquoting, sample inactivation, preparation of supplies and study materials, and related laboratory activities.
• Cross-train to provide support for animal plethysmography, aerosol operations, and related assay activities as needed.
• Perform routine cleaning, restocking, maintenance, and compliance activities within assigned BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory and containment areas.
• Other duties as assigned

• Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through a nationally recognized accreditation organization such as ASCP or AMT.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant scientific discipline.
• Seven (7) or more years of post-graduate experience in a high-throughput clinical pathology laboratory, diagnostic laboratory, hospital laboratory, or research environment.
• BPRP enrollment is required and shall be held and maintained IAW the provisions in this contract and all applicable regulations. 
• Experience in chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis testing.
• Experience performing laboratory procedures, testing, research activities, and scientific support functions consistent with a Laboratory Technician 5 level position.
• Experience independently performing complex laboratory procedures and scientific protocols.
• Experience collecting, documenting, analyzing, and reporting laboratory and research data.
• Experience supporting laboratory operations, laboratory equipment maintenance, quality systems, and biosafety requirements.
• Experience training and mentoring laboratory personnel.
• Ability to work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratory environments.
• Successfully pass background and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in coagulation testing and microbiology.
• Experience performing clinical pathology testing within BSL-3 and/or BSL-4 containment environments.
• Knowledge of or experience working within GLP-regulated laboratory environments.
• Experience preparing for or supporting laboratory audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
• Experience developing, revising, and maintaining standard operating procedures.
• Experience supporting laboratory animal research programs and clinical pathology operations.
• Experience serving as a laboratory lead, primary point of contact, trainer, or mentor.
• Experience preparing technical reports, laboratory summaries, manuscripts, or scientific presentations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Advanced knowledge of clinical pathology laboratory operations and testing methodologies.
• Knowledge of hematology, clinical chemistry, coagulation testing, urinalysis, microbiology, and related laboratory procedures.
• Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements, 21 CFR Part 58 regulations, ASVCP Quality Assurance Laboratory guidelines, and applicable laboratory quality standards.
• Knowledge of quality control, quality assurance, equipment validation, laboratory inspections, audits, and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Knowledge of biosafety, laboratory safety, and containment procedures required for work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 environments.
• Ability to independently perform, evaluate, interpret, document, and troubleshoot complex clinical pathology testing procedures.
• Ability to identify laboratory anomalies, determine root causes, implement corrective actions, and maintain required documentation.
• Ability to maintain laboratory records, SOPs, inventories, quality documentation, and technical reports.
• Ability to train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel.
• Ability to prepare and present technical information, laboratory reports, scientific summaries, and oral presentations.
• Ability to communicate effectively with scientists, veterinarians, laboratory personnel, auditors, and leadership.
