About this role
About the Department
Make a difference where it matters most—help keep essential utility services flowing for the Flagstaff community while building a rewarding career in the field.
Join our team as Meter Technician I with the City of Flagstaff and play a vital role in ensuring the reliable delivery of utility services to our residents. In this position, you'll enjoy a dynamic blend of fieldwork and customer service as you drive assigned routes, complete service orders, perform meter turn-ons and turn-offs, process non-payment disconnections, investigate billing exceptions such as unusually high or no water usage, and program meter sets. If you thrive working independently, enjoy solving problems, and take pride in delivering exceptional service while supporting the efficient operation of the City's utility system, we'd love to have you on our team.
Position Duties
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Reads water meters (including reading meters electronically and visually) and prepares information for final upload into the billing system.
- Uses a computer tablet/device and mobile radio collection device to obtain water meter readings for the billing system.
- Applies established collection settings to electronic radio transmitters (ERTs) at water meters for a variety of meter manufacturers.
- Recommends water meter and register change-outs.

- Carries out work orders (including account turn-ons, account turn-offs, check reads, lock-offs, customer requests, etc.).
- Enters notes and observations into billing system work order software.
- Communicates with customers regarding water usage and questions, sometimes under stressful situations such as high bills or water service disconnections.
- Performs advanced troubleshooting to identify and resolve discrepancies between the physical water meter, the meter reading (AMR/AMI) system, and the utility billing system, using diagnostic software and field tools to determine the source of the inconsistency.
- Applies electrical knowledge to diagnose and resolve meter and ERT issues.
- Applies mathematical interpretation of raw meter reads (including unit conversions, multipliers, and register rollovers) to determine how a read will translate from the physical meter into the billing system, ensuring customers are billed accurately.
- Safely operates a vehicle in the performance of business-related activities, assigned duties, and routes.
- Works collaboratively as part of the Meter Technician team, sharing knowledge and best practices to support consistent, high-quality service delivery.
