About This Position:

The position operates heavy equipment as part of the Interstate Statewide Sign Maintenance functions.  This includes the installation, maintenance, and repair of signs on Interstate, LA and US routes.  

The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment: Digger trucks, Platform Trucks, Forklifts, Frontend loaders, Dump Trucks, Backhoe, Bobcat. 

This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a Class A commercial drivers license with air brakes.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Position Duties

Three years of experience in mobile equipment operations.

Job Duties:

  • Operates heavy equipment for the installation, maintenance and repair of signs and supports on Interstate and US routes Statewide. This includes the new MASSH 400 system that took the place of wood poles. The equipment includes a crane/dragline (truck or track mounted) with a lifting capacity of greater than or equal to 40,000 pounds, and a truck mounted I Statewide Crew platform. The crane is used to lift beams, signs, trusses, cantilevers and is also used to bore holes up to 36” in diameter for support foundations. The platform is used to lift employees over 75 feet to work on signs and overhead structures.

  • Assists the Foreman in the inspection of damaged signs and supports to determine material needs to complete the work.  Also, help out on construction Sign Inspection when necessary.  Ensure that the equipment has necessary supplies for daily operations.  

  • Helps erect specific traffic control devise such as cones and work zone signing prior to starting the work.  In addition, the employee is on 24 hour call out in case of emergencies.  Assumes supervisory responsibilities when the Foreman is absent.  

  • While on the ground or in the equipment overhead, the employee will operate small handheld equipment such as impact wrenches, drills, air rivet guns, etc. to assist in the mounting or repair of signs or supports.
