About this role
The UVA Office for Sustainability’s Nitrogen Working Group (NWG) is hiring several UVA undergraduate students. Positions in both our data focused and outreach focused teams are available.
Responsibilities:
- Data Team: Collecting, processing, and validating food data used to report progress on UVA's 2030 nitrogen footprint goal. Much of the work will be done in Excel, but we are increasingly exploring moving towards Python and R for data processing.
- Outreach Team: Making informative communications about nitrogen to educate the student body, creating and posting content on interacting with students via Instagram, editing video content, and engaging students during in-person tabling events and collaborations with other organizations.
All employees are asked to attend a weekly, one hour, meeting of their specific team in addition to a group meeting every other week (twice a month), as well as responding to emails and completing tasks outside of meeting hours. Much of the work outside of meeting times can be done remotely with in-person attendance at events and for collaborating with teammates. Meeting times will be determined based on each team member's class schedule during the semester. This position is for up to 10 hours of work per week, with 5 hours often being the minimum necessary to complete the weekly tasks. Data-Focused Work
Responsibilities:

Preferred qualifications:
- Interest in sustainability and the environmental sciences
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage time well
- Collaborates well with both peers and other university stakeholders
- Skills specific to data:
- Experience using Microsoft Excel for large datasets
- Experience with data management in R or Python software
Outreach-Focused Work
Responsibilities:
- Making informative communications about nitrogen to educate the student body
- Creating and posting content on interacting with students via Instagram
- Editing video content
- Engaging students during in-person tabling events and collaborations with other organizations.
Preferred qualifications:
- Interest in sustainability and the environmental sciences
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage time well
- Collaborates well with both peers and other university stakeholders
- Skills specific to outreach:
- Experience in creating and editing posts, graphics, and online video content
- Experience using social media to communicate complex topics to a broad audience
- Experience in event organization, specifically focused on student engagement
