About the Department

Serve in a support role to Juvenile Detention and Post-Adjudication Institutional staff by escorting detained juveniles from intra and inter-locations in a safe and secure manner. De-escalate and counsel volatile and physically aggressive juveniles; maintain secure custody of detained residents; prevent escapes, assaults and misconduct by residents; conduct search and property inventory of new in-custody referrals; conduct dress in and release procedures; conduct personal and facility searches; screen and monitor visitation; counsel and assign disciplinary actions; receive and correctly distribute confidential resident information; assist with inter-departmental transportation and document all non-routine events. Conduct various housekeeping duties including resident laundry.

Position Duties

1. Maintains secure custody of detained residents, preventing escapes, assaults and misconduct by residents
2. Maintains the safety, health and well-being of residents and staff
3. Escorts residents safely inside and outside the facility to multiple locations upon request; escorts all hostile and violent visitors from the Detention Center
4. Intervenes in aggressive situations with counseling, crisis intervention, physical and mechanical restraint
5. Conducts and documents initial health screening, program orientation and property inventory of new referrals prior to conducting dress in procedures
6. Assists the Medical Services Supervisor during medical exams and treatment.
7. Determines, implements and documents the need for prescribed disciplinary measures
8. Screens and monitors family visits for compliance; receives information and prescribed medications from parents
9. Documents incidents and restraints; exchanges information with probation officers; testifies in court
10. Conducts facility-wide and personal searches for contraband
11. Performs all other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED. 
Two (2) years experience in a related field. 
One (1) year of experience working with children. 
Ability to be certified as a Texas Juvenile Detention Officer. 
Ability to be certified in First Aid, CPR and Non-Violent restraint. 
Valid driver license and automobile liability insurance. 
College degree may substitute for experience requirement. 
Knowledge of State Juvenile Detention Standards; understanding of adolescent behavior and facility security. If hired, proof of education required at new hire processing.

Other Qualifications

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to walk, stand, reach, hold and lift. Incumbent works primarily inside a locked secure facility and encounters potentially violent and hostile residents and visitors. May also be exposed to contagious medical diseases.
