About this role

Summary:
The Officer, Truancy Prevention, will work closely with school administration, guidance personnel, and school social workers to improve the attendance of chronic non-attendees and other “at risk” students with poor attendance.


DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS: All district employees must:

Responsibilities:
· Works closely with school social workers and guidance personnel in identifying students who have high absentee rates.

· Meets with students and assists them in making positive choices about attending school regularly.

· Makes home visits to follow-up with chronically absent students.

· Communicates with parents, and assist them in ensuring that their child is attending school regularly and increase parent/guardian awareness of attendance laws and the consequences of non-compliance.

· Identifies school-age students who are habitually absent from school.

· Involves parents in interventions that promote school attendance.

· Is knowledgeable of the neighborhood dynamics.

· Establishes a confidential and trusting relationship with parents and members of the community.

· Follows school district policies and procedures as they relate to targeted population.

· Makes referrals to Student Support Services and other school personnel that are appropriate for the targeted population.

· Maintains a cooperative working relationship with school-based personnel, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations.

· Compiles and maintains daily activity reports, anecdotal records, annual reports, and attends periodic conferences, and staff meetings.

· Performs any other duties as assigned.

Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in general clerical duties. Successful completion of one (1) year of college (30 semester hours) may substitute for one (1) year of the experience requirement.

Language Skills: Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals. Writes routine reports and correspondence. Speaks effectively before groups of individuals.

Mathematical Skills: Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Computes rate, ratio, and percent and draws and interprets bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deals with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: Microsoft Office.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical Activities: Standing, walking, sitting, handling, keyboarding, talking, and hearing.

Lifting Demands: Up to 10 pounds.

Reaching Activities: Both dominant and non-dominant hand; overhead.

Environmental Conditions: Noise intensity: 3, moderate.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the use of the employee's own private vehicle to traveling to various school sites, work locations, and/or community organizations throughout the district. Compensation for job related travel mileage will be provided.
