Job Title: Operational Accounting – 2026 Summer Internship
Location: New York City
Duration: 8 weeks (Monday June 8th to Friday July 31)
Pay Rate: $20 per hour
Department Summary:
The Operational Accounting department oversees the financial accuracy and operational integrity of core accounting functions. The team is responsible for reconciling and monitoring liability, suspense, premium, and benefit accounts to ensure all transactions are complete, accurate, and properly classified. This includes identifying and resolving discrepancies, validating system-generated entries, and ensuring timely clearing of outstanding items.
Operational Accounting partners closely with Finance, Operations, and Technology teams to support the monthly and quarterly financial close. The department reviews account activity, prepares reconciliation documentation, and ensures adherence to established General Ledger rules and accounting policies. By maintaining strong controls and consistent oversight, Operational Accounting helps safeguard financial data quality, supports regulatory and audit requirements, and contributes to reliable financial reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare journal entries
- Prepare reconciliations for financial statement accounts
- Prepare monthly financial statement analysis
- Assist in monthly close process
- Assist in preparation of quarterly financial statements (Quarterly Statement)
Required Qualifications:
- Only accepting rising Sophomores (grad year May 2029) and rising Juniors (grad year May 2028).
- Must have a minimum overall 3.4 GPA.
- Must be able to commute to NYC 4 days a week (Monday – Thursday)
Role Summary:
Mutual of America’s Summer Internship Program provides college students with hands-on corporate experience working with meaningful projects and assignments. Throughout the 8-week program, interns will not only have direct guidance from experienced leaders in their assigned departments but can have the opportunity to attend training classes and planned events with other interns.
