Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
This position works under the supervision of the principal and assumes responsibility for the safety and welfare of students under their charge while students are in the lunch area, classrooms (on rainy days), and playground and while students are on their way to and from designated eating and play areas.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Depending upon individual assignment, the Para Educator performs one or more of the following duties as directed by the supervisor.
- Supervise students throughout lunch
- Clean tops and seating areas of lunch tables and counters
- Keep debris off floor and under lunch tables
- Wipe up spills in lunch area
- Remind students of lunchroom, line, hallway, and recess expectations
- Report any unsafe conditions to principal
- Maintain visible contact with students on playgrounds to insure safety
- Other duties as assigned at the specific site
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to supervise students in order to maintain appropriate safety and order
- Knowledge of basic first aid procedures
- Knowledge of the school’s behavior expectations
- Effective oral communication skills
- Ability to deal with children in a positive and confident manner
- Ability to remain flexible to changes in assignments or situations
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to be fair and consistent when working with children
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff
- Ability to lift and carry children weighing up to 50 pounds
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with school-aged children
- Experience in a school setting desirable

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to Principal (evaluated by Principal).
WORKING CONDITIONS
Experiences frequent interruptions. Required to work outdoors at times in inclement weather and to deal with sometimes angry or distraught students. Exposed to possible infectious disease.
LICENSES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Completes training in first aid and CPR as required by the district. Requires fingerprinting and criminal record check for felonies and child abuse.
