Arnold Palmer Hospital Perfusion Department is seek for a Pediatric Perfusionist is qualified by academic and clinical education to provide extra-corporeal circulation during a medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person’s cardiopulmonary, circulatory, and/or respiratory function. Under supervision of a physician
the Clinical Pediatric Perfusionist will operate the Heart-Lung Machine to maintain the circulation and physiologic parameters perioperatively for the patient during congenital cardiac surgical procedures requiring critical knowledge, skills and judgment to care for neonatal and pediatric patients requiring complex assessment and therapies, high intensity interventions and advanced level continuous
vigilance.

 

Candidates Must possesses a current ABCP certification (CCP) with the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) Annual renewal required.  Maintain current BLS/ PALS certification, ACLS recommended. Must pass Certified ECMO Specialist -Pediatric exam (CES-P) within 2 years of hire. Adult ECMO certification (CES-A) recommended.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions
o Assembles and operates of the Heart-Lung machine for complex cardiac congenital procedures that require Extra
corporeal circulation or cardio-pulmonary bypass according to protocols prescribed by the supervising medical staff.
o Possesses specialized skill and knowledge unique to neonatal and pediatric extra-corporeal support.
o Develops a patient specific care plan for monitoring patient’s hemodynamics, physiological status, and blood gas
management following established protocols to attain expected outcomes.
o Prepares and tests equipment to assure proper function prior to initiating extracorporeal support.
o Notifies supervising medical staff of any unusual or unexpected events or problems
o Administers blood products, IV solutions, and pharmacologic support required to maintain the appropriate
hemodynamics and physiological parameters through the extra-corporeal circuit.
o Maintains appropriate and accurate record related to any involved procedure.
o Operates Extra-corporeal circulation, Extra-corporeal Life Support, Cardio-Pulmonary Support, and all forms of
Ventricular Assist Devices
o Standby for scheduled and emergent cases in multiple locations including but not limited to: the cardiac cath lab, OR
suite, multiple ICU settings at both APH/WPH.
o Conducts Anticoagulation/Coagulation monitoring and analysis with treatment of related conditions in all Extra
corporeal modalities
o Practices Blood conservation, autotransfusion, and myocardial preservation techniques for complex congenital cardiac
procedures.
o Performs induction of systemic hypothermia/reversal of systemic Hypothermia
o Demonstrates advanced knowledge of cerebral protective methods including Antegrade/Retrograde Cerebral
perfusion during circulatory arrest procedures.
o Practices Hemodilution techniques as well as hemofiltration and advanced MUF techniques, Hemodialysis modalities
required for congenital cardiac procedures accessed through the Extra-corporeal circuit.
o Performs vacuum assist and other advanced drainage techniques. Also practices hyperthermic intraperitoneal
Chemotherapy (Hipec) and other chemotherapy modalities which are offered system wide.
o Demonstrates proficiency with maintenance of equipment, cleans work area, and reports necessary repairs or
adjustments through proper channels.
o Maintains the perfusion/surgical database
o Demonstrates Age specific knowledge competence to provide necessary care for the age of patients served.
o Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possess the ability to assess data
reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients
requirements relative to their needs:

Qualifications:

Education/Training
Meets all educational requirements to become Certified Cardiovascular Perfusionist by the American board of Cardiovascular
Perfusion (ABCP)


Licensure/Certification
