DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position focuses on skilled operation of highway construction and maintenance equipment while supporting a wide range of field tasks on maintenance crews. The role combines equipment operation, manual labor, and strong safety awareness to keep roads and bridges functioning effectively. As a PennDOT CDL Operator, you will perform the following duties:
- Equipment Operation: Operate trucks, loaders, and additional machinery as needed for maintenance work
- CDL Compliance: Maintain required CDL credentials and complete daily pre and post operation checks
- Traffic Control: Perform flagging duties to support safe movement of vehicles through work zones
- Manual Labor: Use a variety of hand tools to complete physical tasks such as cutting brush, cleaning culverts, and repairing barriers
- Maintenance Support: Make minor equipment repairs, complete preventative tasks, and assist mechanics when needed
- Safety Practices: Follow all safety procedures, report incidents promptly, and stay aware of hazards on the job
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Work schedule subject to change based on weather/season
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
Organization or Location Restrictions:
- This posting is restricted to Department of Transportation, District 2 including Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Juniata, McKean, Mifflin, and Potter county employees only.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program; or
- Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- All permanent employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
- All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. This position requires that the E restriction is removed.
- This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
- All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
- All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
- This position requires additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
