The Office of Permitting and Compliance (OPC) oversees all permitting and regulatory functions within the Department, ensuring clarity, consistency, and regulatory integrity. By streamlining processes, accelerating permitting timelines and enhancing data-driven decision-making, the Office ensures compliance with environmental standards while supporting responsible economic development. 

The Petroleum Scientist 3 performs high level work as an advisor and state expert to agency staff and the public on matters relating to Class I, II, III, and V injection, storage and disposal well siting, permitting, and monitoring as well as related environmental and remediation matters in the state.

Position Duties

A bachelor’s degree in a geoscience field or engineering plus two years of experience in the evaluation of oil and gas drilling, oil and gas production and/or oil and gas transportation, mining engineering or geology; OR

A master's degree in a geoscience field or engineering plus one year of the required specialized experience; OR

A doctorate in a geoscience field or engineering.

Other Qualifications

This Petroleum Scientist 3 position is located within the Engineering Division of the Office Permitting & Compliance and is located in Baton Rouge, LA. The incumbent in this position reports to the Petroleum Scientist Supervisor. All work is performed in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. 

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Permit applications for Class I, II, III, V, or VI subsurface injection/disposal wells require the submission of complex geologic subsurface structure and isopach maps, etc.  
• Functions as principal assistant to their supervisor in coordinating and directing technical unit activities and managerial functions as they relate to the total geological program of the Division.
• Mentors and reviews of work performed by lower level petroleum scientists doing technical geological analyses and evaluations and, on a project basis, sub-professional staff.
• Thoroughly inspects and monitors by-product operations, including hazardous waste injection wells, solution mining of salt, hydrocarbon storage in solution-mined salt caverns, etc. 
• Disseminates information, orally and written, and advises the general public, industry representatives, consultants, Federal, State, Parish, etc. on various geological matters. 
• Provides guidance and direction on geological issues and serves in an advisory capacity during conferences and meetings with representatives. 
• May perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION-SPECIFIC DETAILS:

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a fulltime Classified Probationary appointment or may be filled as a Job Appointment (In the event that funds become available for a permanent position, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment). 

Work Schedule: Work hours are flexible.

Compensation:  The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience. This position is eligible for premium pay of up to $2.00 per hour for licensed employees. A Special Entrance Rate (SER) is offered to qualified applicants.
