Position Summary:

To provide direct supervision and leadership to a team of uniformed patrol officers who provide police services to the university community on property owned or controlled by the University of Northern Colorado. This position ensures that police services are delivered consistent with department policy and procedure, and any applicable laws or regulations. This position provides guidance in routine and critical situations, and is responsible for the morale, development, and performance of those they supervise.

Job Duties:

Operational Leadership 20%

Directs, coordinates, and supports daily department operations. Monitors officer performance in the field, ensures compliance with laws and policies. Reviews reports and documentation, and maintains readiness to respond to critical incidents.

Personnel Supervision and Performance Management 20%

Supervises assigned patrol officers, manages performance, conducts evaluations, provides coaching, and recommends discipline or recognition as appropriate.

Training, Mentorship, and Officer Development 10%

Mentors officers and supports professional development by identifying strengths, needs, and motivators. Encourages growth and skill development aligned with departmental needs.

Critical Incident Management and Emergency Response 20%

Acts as on-scene commander during major incidents. Coordinates resources, ensures officer safety, and manages incident response until relieved.

Patrol Operations 20%

Determines effective policing strategies and identifies priorities for the patrol section. Communicates platoon goals and expectations for identified operational periods. Performs frontline duties when staffing requires, specifically, meets the obligations of a patrol officer. These include but are not limited to responding to calls for service, writing police reports, conducting investigative follow-up, and proactive patrol and enforcement. Police Sergeants are expected to serve as a role model by executing these tasks to the highest performance standards.

Other Duties as Assigned 10%

Performs additional assignments and special projects as directed by supervisory or command staff in support of departmental operations and campus safety initiatives. These assignments may vary based on operational needs, staffing levels, or emerging priorities. Examples include but are not limited to: assisting with accreditation or compliance efforts, supporting departmental initiatives, participating on committees or working groups, and completing other tasks that contribute to the effective functioning of the department. These responsibilities may be temporary, periodic, or ongoing depending on departmental needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience:

Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification

Three years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Substitutions:

Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
