What drives us, is our aspiration, our desire and ambition to keep pushing the envelope, overcoming any hurdle, challenging the status quo to continually find a better way. You will experience these qualities of passion, pride and aspiration in many ways — from a rich set of career development programs to support of community service projects to social events that foster fun and relationship building across our global community.

The Role

AspenTech is seeking an exceptional candidate to join our Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) Team. In this role, you will blend power systems engineering expertise with software development to design and build new features that support the next generation of grid modernization. You will help deliver innovative, user‑centric, and high‑quality capabilities that enable utilities and operators to effectively manage an evolving landscape of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), including solar, wind, storage, and other advanced grid assets.

You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of software engineers and power systems/electrical engineering professionals to create solutions that strengthen grid reliability, support decarbonization, and enable dynamic DER deployment at scale.

Aspen Tech’s R&D organization plays a pivotal role in clean energy transition. In this position, you will build compelling features that allow customers to visualize, control, optimize, and analyze Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). We will provide specific on‑the‑job training where needed.

To be successful, you should bring a strong foundation in power systems engineering and electrical grid concepts, combined with proficiency in software development. We are looking for a self‑driven problem solver eager to learn, collaborate, and contribute to complex, high‑impact development projects.

Your Impact

  • Develop and maintain mission‑critical grid and DER‑related applications using C++.
  • Collaborate with software developers, architects, and power systems experts to design and implement best‑in‑class DERMS capabilities.
  • Design and implement reliable, performant, and fault‑tolerant code grounded in real‑world power systems requirements and user stories.
  • Ensure software quality and reliability through unit testing.
  • Participate in code reviews and design reviews.
  • Engage in agile ceremonies (daily stand‑ups, story refinement, sprint planning, retrospectives).
  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve software issues in both algorithmic logic and power‑system‑related functionality.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both power systems specialists and non‑technical audiences.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited institution in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Software Engineering or related technical field. Degree in Electrical Engineering with Power Systems Emphasis is preferred.
  • Familiarity with mixed integer programming and convex optimization.
  • Familiarity with industrial solvers like Gurobi, CLP, and/or CBC.
  • Strong knowledge of optimization techniques, including mixed‑integer programming.
  • Experience in identifying, communicating, and resolving problems in a collaborative, professional manner.
  • A strong desire to help facilitate the decarbonization and renewable expansion across the globe.
  • Electrical engineering background in utility industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of modern grid technologies - Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), Distribution Systems (DMS), Grid Energy Storage (BES), Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO), Virtual Power Plant (VPP) preferred.
