Principal SDE, AWS Professional Services - Product & Solutions Engineering

We are looking for a customer-obsessed Principal Software Development Engineer to join our Engineering Services team. As Amazon's most senior individual contributors, Principal Engineers are both visionary leaders and hands-on builders. In this role you will define the multi-year technical strategy and architecture for the P&S Engineering Services portfolio — the cloud-native, production-ready software and infrastructure that our customers integrate into their own offerings. You will set the bar for engineering excellence across multiple teams, drive org-wide architectural decisions with lasting consequences, and personally tackle the hardest unsolved problems in how ProServe delivers value at scale. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic visionary who can translate complex customer and business needs into simple, extensible solutions. As members of AWS Professional Services, we are not stewards of a single AWS service but of the entire AWS platform — keeping abreast of the ever-widening stream of platform improvements and new services. The candidate should have expert-level system design and architecture skills, a track record of influencing technical direction across organizational boundaries, the ability to drive cross-team consensus on one-way-door decisions, and a demonstrated history of delivering large-scale distributed systems that fundamentally raise the bar for an organization. Deep experience with AI/ML-driven applications, cloud-native architectures at production scale, and modern DevOps practices are highly applicable.



Key job responsibilities
Own the end-to-end architecture strategy and multi-year technical vision for the P&S Engineering Services portfolio Serve as the technical authority for cross-cutting architectural decisions; decompose complex, ambiguous problems into simple solutions Personally design and build critical-path systems; prototype and validate architectural hypotheses before committing the org to a direction Drive cross-organizational alignment (up to VP level) on architectural decisions with lasting consequences — influencing without direct authority Establish engineering standards and operational excellence across the organization through exemplary practice — code quality, observability, runbooks, COEs Mentor and develop senior engineers toward Principal-level impact; elevate technical discourse through design and architecture reviews Balance technical leadership with business judgment — drive decisions that measurably improve ProServe delivery efficiency and customer outcomes Identify and drive adoption of emerging technologies (AI/ML, agentic architectures) where they create competitive advantage Communicate technical vision effectively in writing for audiences from engineers to VP-level leadership Obtain/maintain AWS Certifications; occasional travel to customer sites (~20%)

AWS Professional Services Product & Solutions (P&S) builds and operates AI-enhanced software solutions that transform ProServe from traditional project-based consulting to product-led, outcome-based delivery. We productize ProServe's expertise into scalable, repeatable solutions that accelerate customer GenAI, cloud, and industry transformation — reducing complexity, improving time-to-value, and driving delivery efficiency across the customer's cloud journey.

• 10+ years of engineering experience
• 5+ years of engineering team management experience
• 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience
• Experience partnering with product or program management teams
• Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment

• Experience partnering with product and program management teams
• Experience designing and developing large scale, high-traffic applications
• Experience in mentoring, leading, or managing more junior engineers
• Experience architecting/operating solutions built on AWS, or experience implementing a cloud-based technology solution
• Experience developing, deploying and managing AI products at scale
• Experience in Agile methodologies and DevOps practices
• Experience leading the design, build and deployment of complex and performant (reliable and scalable) software solutions in production
• Experience developing strategies that influence leadership decisions at the organizational level
• Experience writing technical articles, speaking at technology conferences, and contributing to open source

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
