PRN Sterile Processing Tech

Job Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This position plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety by maintaining the highest standards of infection prevention and sterile processing practices. The technician works closely with the operating room team to ensure instruments and supplies are available, accurate, and ready for surgical procedures.

Job Description

- Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments and medical equipment.
- Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, including steam autoclaves and low-temperature sterilizers.
- Perform quality assurance testing and maintain sterilization records and documentation.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and damage; identify items requiring repair or replacement.
- Assemble instrument trays according to physician preference cards and facility standards.
- Maintain adequate inventory of sterile supplies and instruments.
- Stock operating rooms and clinical areas with sterile supplies as needed.
- Follow all infection prevention, OSHA, AAMI, CDC, and facility policies and procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe sterile processing department.
- Collaborate effectively with nursing staff, surgical technologists, and physicians to meet procedural needs.
- Participate in department quality improvement initiatives and continuing education.

Job Requirements

- High school diploma or GED required.
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification preferred or required within one year of hire.
- Previous sterile processing experience in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center preferred.
- Knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection prevention, and instrument processing.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and stand for extended periods.
- Basic computer skills and accurate documentation abilities.
- Current BLS certification preferred.

Hours and Working Conditions

- Full-time position.
- Monday through Friday, with hours based on the surgical schedule.
- Occasional early mornings, evenings, or overtime may be required based on operational needs.
- Fast-paced ambulatory surgery center environment.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and repetitive hand movements.
- Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all infection control and safety standards.
