Department Summary:

The Michigan Recreation Department at the University of Michigan is dedicated to fostering a healthy lifestyle through engagement, leadership, and active participation. The department manages several programs, four indoor facilities, two outdoor field complexes, and an adventure-based education center. The department plays a vital role in campus life and well-being with a team of 40+ full-time staff members and 650+ student employees. Established in 1913, it is recognized as one of the first collegiate recreation programs. It was the first to develop a facility specifically for student recreation, the Intramural Sports Building, which opened in 1928. Michigan Recreation operates within the Division of Student Life, reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Life for Health and Wellness.

Position Summary:

The Program Manager will assist with the overall administration and daily operational management of the Club Sports program. The position will provide strategic leadership and vision for programs and staff in all areas of oversight; will provide direct supervision and mentorship of student staff and develop budgets, policies, procedures, and direct operations in all areas of oversight. This role will serve on assigned committees to represent the Department and support all Michigan Recreation Department initiatives as needed.

Responsibilities*

Program Oversight (50%):  

• Advise and collaborate with Club Sport student leaders on the planning, promotion, organization, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of assigned Club Sport teams.
• Provide a high-quality Club Sports program experience, provide learning and development opportunities for students, staff, and the University community.
• Oversee Club Sport travel request, planning, and approval process/procedures.
• Observe and evaluate assigned Club Sports practices, competitions and special events.
• Ensure alignment and compliance with University, department safety and risk management protocols, procedures, and certifications.  
• Support Athletic Training Fellows with scheduling and connecting with club leaders.
• Serve as a liaison with other university departments and on assigned committees to represent the department.  
• Assist with development and implementation of training and ongoing education programs for Club Sports officers, coaches, staff and program participants.  

Staff Oversight (30%):  

• Provide supervision, direction, coaching and mentoring of student temporary staff including Club Sport Supervisors and Student Coordinators.
• Hire and develop student programming staff to meet Department needs and goals, as well as industry standards.  
• Train, evaluate, and provide regular feedback to direct reports to ensure direct reports represent Michigan Recreation in a positive way
• Ensure that all staff obtain and maintain appropriate certifications and required safety training.

Fiscal Oversight (10%):  

• Approve expenditures from Department, gift, and agency funds for assigned clubs. Compile budgets and monitor balances.  
• Ensure compliance of operations with Department, Division, and University policies.  
• Purchase and maintain inventory of equipment and gear as needed.
• Develop budget and manage bi-weekly payroll of temporary staff throughout the fiscal year.

Leadership (10%):  

• Provide departmental leadership; develop and enforce departmental policies.
• Serve on committees or work teams to support the Department, Division and University.  
• Other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

• A Bachelor's degree
• Experience in staff training and supervision                                                      
• Proven effective leadership, management and mentoring for a student development focused program
• Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED or ability to obtain within six months of hire

Desired Qualifications*

• Master's degree in Higher Education, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management and Communication, or related field
• Experience with Club Sports programming, policy creation, risk management, and fiscal management
• Experience in travel coordination of Student organizations, and understanding of policies, procedures and safety measures accompanying travel (regional and national).
• Involvement in NIRSA or other professional associations.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

 Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

The position will assist with oversight, development and administration of budgets in the Club Sports program.  Additionally, this position is responsible for oversight and compliance with university policies and procedures for multiple university accounts held for each Club Sport. This position will be directly responsible for the temp budget of $38,000.  

Working Conditions:

On occasion, could be expected to work evening hours or weekends to support Michigan Recreation events; as needed; be on-call to provide leadership during times programs and facilities are operating.

Physical Requirements:

Routinely moves/transports items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, etc.

Direct Reports:

Student and Temporary Staff (approximately 25 annually)
