We are hiring a R&D Scientist Intern- Data Science. The R&D Scientist Intern will provide R&D support of projects in product and process development by conducting laboratory research under the guidance of a supervisor.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a back-end software package capable of visualizing experimental data onto organism-specific biological networks.

  • Integrate diverse types of post-processed experimental data, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and spent media data in the visualization.

  • Design and implement algorithms for generating visual figures that contextualize experimental data within biological network frameworks.

  • Ensure robust documentation of the pre- and post-development source code, including usage, guidelines, and technical explanations.

  • Collaborate closely with experimental scientists to understand data visualization needs and facilitate experimental design.

  • Learning Objectives

    • Gain practical experience in software development for scientific research applications.

    • Develop skills in handling and integrating high-throughput biological data types.

    • Learn techniques for the visualization of complex biological networks and experimental datasets.

    • Understand the challenges and best practices in scientific code documentation and user support.

    • Enhance collaboration and communication abilities by working with multidisciplinary teams of experimental scientists and bioinformaticians.

  • Deliverables
    • A functional back-end package that accepts various forms of post-processed experimental data and generates visual figures overlayed on biological networks.
    • Comprehensive source code for the visualization toolbox.
    • Detailed documentation covering installation, usage, and technical aspects of the package.

Required Skills/Education:

  • Must be pursuing at least a Master's degree or PhD and a returning student with a focus on Applied Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or Engineering.

  • Proficiency in Python and/or R for data processing, analysis, and scientific software development. Experience with visualization libraries on Python and/or R to generate publication-quality figures (e.g., Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, ggplot2, Escher, etc.) and translating data into clear visual narratives.

  • Experience working with high-throughput biological data types (e.g., genomics, bulk/scRNA-seq, proteomics, metabolomics). Strong familiarity with different types of biological networks.

  • Software engineering fundamentals: version control (Git), modular design, building reusable packages/libraries and web apps.

  • Familiarity with common research computing environments (Linux/command line) and reproducible workflows (e.g., Conda, Docker, Pyenv—nice to have).

  • Aptitude for understanding, communicating, and interpreting scientific concepts, applications and methods.

  • Highly motivated with strong problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to multitask, adjust quickly, and be organized.

  • Ability to work with others and independently as required

Salary and Benefits:

  • For California, the base salary range for this position is $23.00-$25.00 per hour. Compensation for the successful candidate will depend on the level of degree in pursuit.
