About this role

The Schwab Technology Services (STS) Research & Development team explores emerging technologies and evaluates how they can create value across Schwab.

The R&D Software Engineer contributes to early-stage research initiatives by building prototypes, experiments, and proof-of-concepts under the guidance of senior engineers and technical leaders. This role is well-suited for engineers early in their careers who are curious, eager to learn, and motivated to work on innovative technology in a collaborative research environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and development of prototypes and proof-of-concepts in areas such as generative AI, digital assets, and emerging platforms. 
  • Implement well-scoped technical solutions based on research direction and architectural guidance.
  • Independently research and learn a new area/field, define and conduct relevant experiments, present key results, and work with stakeholders to identify valuable use cases
  • Assist with experimentation, testing, and iteration on early-stage concepts and technical ideas.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners on research initiatives, platform integrations, and exploratory projects. 
  • Participate in technical discussions, code reviews, demos, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Clearly document work and communicate progress, challenges, and learnings to the broader team. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field. 
  • 2-5 years of professional experience, internships, or academic project work in software engineering or applied research.
  • Exposure to one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, C#, or JavaScript/Node.js. 
  • Foundational understanding of modern software development practices.
  • Interest in emerging technologies such as AI/ML systems, agent-based architectures, or decentralized technologies. 
  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguous problem spaces with guidance and mentorship. 
  • Strong collaboration skills, curiosity, and a growth mindset.
