About this role

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Manager, Aviation Safety, the Intern, Safety (HSEQ) assists the Safety department with AI initiatives, model builds and testing, and other departmental projects. This role provides hands-on experience in applying AI to real-world aviation challenges, offering professional development opportunities such as mentorship from safety experts and exposure to industry tools.

Job Summary:

  • Design and implement AI algorithms for video analysis, such as object detection for crew actions or segmentation for flight phases.
  • Review and preprocess LOSA video data and FDM logs to identify key features for AI model training.
  • Perform model validation, including accuracy testing and bias assessments, in line with aviation AI safety protocols.
  • Document findings in technical reports and present prototypes during bi-weekly team meetings.
  • Assist in pilot testing of AI tools within the safety program, gathering feedback for iterative improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Successful Candidate Will Have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Enrollment in relevant graduate program (Computer Science, Data Science, Aerospace Engineering, etc.
  • Proficiency in Python programming and AI frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV for computer vision, or equivalent).
  • Foundational knowledge of machine learning techniques, including supervised/unsupervised models for anomaly detection and time-series analysis.
  • Familiarity with aviation safety concepts (e.g., FDM, LOSA, or SMS) preferred, introductory exposure via coursework or projects acceptable.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle sensitive data confidentially.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical reporting and cross-functional collaboration.
  • For the purposes of the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act, this position is designated as Safety Sensitive.
