DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the Safe Drinking Water Program by overseeing inspections, evaluations, and consultations that protect public water supplies. The role ensures that water systems follow regulations and that communities receive safe drinking water. As a Sanitarian, you will perform the following duties:

• Water System Inventories: Conduct evaluations of public water systems to review sources, equipment, and operating practices
• Inspection Work: Complete full and partial inspections to determine compliance with drinking water laws and regulations
• Field Consultations: Provide guidance to operators, engineers, officials, and the public regarding water system requirements
• Plan Review Assistance: Review plans and specifications for new or existing water system facilities and coordinate with technical staff
• Monitoring Oversight: Track water quality data and monitoring results to identify issues and recommend corrective actions
• Compliance Support: Assist with enforcement steps such as issuing notices, conducting conferences, and preparing required documentation

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Altoona. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the training program for the Sanitarian Trainee; or
• Any combination of experience and/or training which affords the applicant the required knowledges and abilities.

Special Requirement:

• You must be in possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Other Requirements:

• You must possess and maintain a REAL ID or passport for this position. Proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment.

• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding.  

You must be eligible for selection in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
