Qualifications
Required
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- One (1) year of experience as a security officer, or equivalent.
- Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
- Must successfully complete compulsory certification training approved by the Virginia Center for School Safety within sixty (60) days of hire and successfully complete recertification training annually.
- Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
- Knowledge of the Fairfax County Public Schools security and fire alarm systems and the patrol functions of the Office of Security.
- Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Virginia as it pertains to crimes against school property.
- Ability to exercise independent, sound judgment and initiative in emergency situations not explicitly covered by school regulations, policies, or guidelines.
- Ability to supervise security staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with personnel at all levels and possess good interpersonal skills.

Major Duties/Essential Functions
- Interprets and communicates security policies, plans, and objectives to subordinates and ensures compliance pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code.
- Advises program managers concerning procedures, equipment needs, budget requirements, and operational activities.
- Assists with the interviewing and selection of candidates for security officer positions.
- Provides orientation and training to new employees.
- Establishes performance standards, prepares performance evaluations, and recommends, as needed, appropriate personnel actions.
- Supervises security activities at the scene of major incidents.
- Performs duties of a security officer, as required by operational necessity.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This position may also visit worksites in the field and be exposed to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises.
