Role Overview

The Senior Technical Automation Engineer, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), is responsible for designing and delivering enterprise-scale automation solutions that improve the reliability, security, and operational efficiency of New York Life's hybrid infrastructure. This role combines deep expertise in infrastructure automation, virtualization, cloud technologies, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices to modernize critical technology platforms supporting the company's business operations.

Working closely with infrastructure, cloud, cybersecurity, architecture, and application teams, you will lead automation initiatives across VMware, on-premises, and cloud environments. You will define engineering standards, implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) solutions, and drive platform resiliency while ensuring compliance with enterprise governance, security, and regulatory requirements. As a senior technical leader, you will mentor engineers, influence automation strategy, and help accelerate New York Life's infrastructure modernization journey.

What You'll Do

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve enterprise automation solutions across hybrid infrastructure environments, leveraging Infrastructure-as-Code, configuration management, and orchestration technologies to improve scalability, consistency, and operational efficiency.

  • Lead automation initiatives across VMware, private cloud, and public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform), supporting infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, lifecycle management, patching, and platform modernization.

  • Build and optimize automation frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes that enable secure, reliable, and compliant infrastructure delivery while reducing manual effort and operational risk.

  • Partner with infrastructure, cybersecurity, architecture, risk, and compliance teams to ensure automation solutions align with enterprise security standards, governance requirements, and regulatory expectations while improving platform resiliency and audit readiness.

  • Provide technical leadership, architectural guidance, and mentorship to engineering teams by establishing automation standards, documenting reusable engineering patterns, and driving adoption of modern Site Reliability Engineering and automation best practices.

What You'll Bring

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Extensive experience designing and implementing enterprise infrastructure automation solutions within large, complex technology environments.

  • Deep expertise administering and automating VMware technologies, including vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, and NSX.

  • Hands-on experience developing Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell DSC, or comparable automation technologies.

  • Experience supporting hybrid cloud environments across VMware and one or more public cloud platforms, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.

  • Strong scripting and automation skills using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar languages.

  • Experience building and supporting CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps automation practices.

  • Strong understanding of infrastructure security, compliance, operational resiliency, disaster recovery, and governance within regulated enterprise environments.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to influence technical decisions across multiple engineering teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, establish engineering standards, and lead complex technical initiatives.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting infrastructure within the insurance, financial services, or other highly regulated industries.

  • Experience with Kubernetes, container platforms, and cloud-native infrastructure automation.

  • Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and tooling.

  • Experience driving enterprise infrastructure modernization and cloud transformation initiatives.

Success Looks Like

  • Enterprise infrastructure is consistently provisioned, configured, and managed through standardized automation, reducing manual effort and operational risk.

  • VMware and hybrid cloud environments demonstrate improved scalability, stability, resource utilization, and operational resiliency.

  • Infrastructure deployments become faster, more reliable, and more consistent through Infrastructure-as-Code and automated delivery pipelines.

  • Automation solutions strengthen security, governance, and compliance while improving audit readiness and reducing configuration drift.
