Purpose of the Role

The Senior Field Engineer – Piping provides construction site engineering expertise and leadership during the execution phase of projects. This role is responsible for interpreting piping designs, resolving field engineering issues, adapting designs to site conditions, and ensuring piping systems are installed in accordance with engineering specifications, applicable codes, quality standards, and project requirements.

As a recognized technical specialist, the Senior Field Engineer – Piping serves as a key advisor to construction management, engineering teams, contractors, and clients. The role requires sound technical judgment, proactive problem-solving, and the ability to lead field engineering activities while supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide field engineering support for piping construction activities from installation through testing and turnover.
  • Interpret piping drawings, specifications, isometrics, material take-offs, and engineering deliverables to support construction execution.
  • Review field conditions and recommend practical engineering solutions to accommodate site constraints while maintaining design intent.
  • Evaluate and resolve technical queries, requests for information (RFIs), non-conformance reports (NCRs), and field change requests.
  • Verify piping installations comply with project specifications, engineering requirements, applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support hydrotesting, flushing, pressure testing, leak testing, and mechanical completion activities.
  • Coordinate with engineering disciplines, construction teams, subcontractors, quality personnel, and commissioning teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Conduct field inspections and audits to ensure workmanship, safety, quality, and compliance requirements are achieved.
  • Review and approve field modifications within delegated authority and recommend design changes when required.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior field engineers and construction personnel.
  • Participate in constructability reviews, work package development, workface planning, and construction sequencing activities.
  • Monitor construction progress and identify technical risks, schedule impacts, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support punch list management, system turnover, pre-commissioning, and commissioning activities.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, presentations, and recommendations to project stakeholders and management.
  • Make independent technical decisions on complex piping issues with consideration of safety, cost, schedule, environmental, and operational impacts.
  • Interface with clients, vendors, fabricators, and contractors to ensure successful project execution.

Qualifications 

  • - University Degree, or equivalent, in a related field or equivalent trade qualification combined with further relevant training and experience. 

  • - Experience varies based on education background. Those with a degree typically have 7+ years of relevant experience, while those with trade qualifications will typically have 12+ years of relevant experience.
