Performs motorist assistance on assigned patrol routes, assisting emergency response agencies during incidents, clearing travel lanes of disabled vehicles and debris, and aiding stranded motorists. Responds to emergency situations deemed necessary by the Communications Manager and SHEP Supervisor. Records response activities from incident scenes and prepares written reports of Responder activities at major incident scenes. Accurately inputs response data into computer database. Performs routine maintenance on and is knowledgeable about the operation and serviceability of vehicles and accountability of equipment assigned to the SHEP Responder team. Responds to tasking to safely mobilize, set up, perform 90-day PMIs and test changeable message boards. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Duties
A high school diploma and six (6) months of related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: Employee must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Position requires attending and successfully completing training classes on diverse topics such as Traffic Control, First Aid/CPR, Hazardous Materials, radio usage, and Defensive Driving. Basic computer skills are needed to transfer daily activities to a database. Mobility, dexterity, excellent vision and hearing are mandatory. Extra hours and nighttime work may be necessary to support emergency situations and/or natural disaster.
