DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
To accomplish Fleet’s mission and our vision of being recognized as the best managed fleet in the country, we are actively seeking a SHOP MANAGER who can supervise and direct the diverse activities associated with maintaining shop accountability and effectiveness. The Shop Manager will assign labor guide flat rate time to job tasks based on industry standards and perform other duties as assigned. The Shop Manager is a Tier 1 position and will provide subject matter expertise as a member of management and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
The SHOP MANAGER duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Supervises and directs the diverse activities associated with maintaining shop accountability and effectiveness.
- Supervises both direct and indirect personnel. Plans, schedules, and coordinates the details of managing multiple repair/parts facilities.
- Plans course of action on routine and non-routine handling of repairs.
- Produces production reports that include concerns and areas of potential improvements.
- Institutes procedures to enforce shop safety and improve work performance.
- Prepares budget for shop tools and supplies.
- Reviews bid documents to confirm vendors’ abilities to supply goods and services.
- Assists with ordering and locating parts to supply all locations, effectively controlling downtime and unscheduled repairs.
- Develops inventory control methods for controlling, handling, and tracking parts. Dispose of obsolete parts to avoid overstocking of items.
- Communicates with vendors to discuss goods, services, and contract disputes.
- Troubleshoots system problems within the shop.

WORKING CONDITIONS
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold moisture, air pollution, chemical gases, and substances. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
This is a FLEET Department Position at the Tier I Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
Requires an Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or certification/licensing in an automotive technology program of over 18 months (i.e., NIASE).
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
Six years equivalent experience in installation, maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment or vehicles or in parts management are required.
Technical automotive experience or professional parts management experience may be substituted for the above education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
MINIMUM LICENSE:
Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. May require a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
PREFERENCES
- Ability to read and understand service, repair, and parts manuals, mechanical diagrams, safety, and hazardous materials communications.
- Advanced math and computer skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Applicants with mechanical aptitude are strongly desired.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

SALARY INFORMATION
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
PAY GRADE: 23
Additional salary incentives include ASE/EVT Certification Pay (up to $5,200 annually) / Evening/Nightshift Incentive Pay (Up to $3,000 annually)
