Job Summary

Position is responsible for instructing operator training courses (classroom and simulator-based) to develop and enhance operator knowledge, skill and confidence. Business goals are to improve plant availability and efficiency and reduced start-up time.

Job Description

What you’ll do:

Essential Job Functions & Tasks

  • Develop and maintain course content and materials to teach operations classroom and simulator based courses for control room and equipment operators and other designated employees.
  • Oversee the development of the annual schedule for the Simulator Learning Center.
  • Teach operations classroom and simulator based courses for control room and equipment operators and other designated employees. Mentor other instructors to develop and enhance operations knowledge and teaching methods.
  • Coach and mentor course participants by providing operations knowledge and telling stories about past operating experiences.
  • Develop, administer and maintain operator tests and proficiency ratings. Communicate individual results to participants and plant management.
  • Review and expand existing simulator programmed situations to include normal and emergency operating conditions and malfunctions applicable to the units.
  • Partner with plant management and operations trainers to coordinate the Simulator courses and insure that course content is consistent with operator learning needs.
  • Coordinate and communicate with Fossil Hydro Technical Skills Team, Generation Engineering, Field Services, Production Optimization and other AEP employees to meet scheduling and learning needs.
  • Support and carry out the company's safety culture by incorporating safe work behaviors into course content and operator learning experiences. Demonstrate personal safe work behaviors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by proper authority.

What we’re looking for:

Education requirements are listed below:

  • Associate degree in power plant technology, mechanical or electrical engineering technology or equivalent education and/or experience.

Work Experience requirement listed below:

  • Ten years of fossil plant operation experience with at least six years' of supercritical control room experience as a control room operator. Energy Production supervisory experience is preferred. Incumbent must demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and clear and concise communications skills (verbal and written). Must possess demonstrated presentation skills for small classroom settings and large groups up to 50 people. Strong analytical skills including knowledge of power plant policies, practices and procedures.

  • Simulator-based and classroom training will often be conducted on all three shifts and may require travel to plants throughout the AEP system.
