Job Summary:

Positively impact the lives of youth in the care of the Department of Juvenile Justice through the collaborative creation and maintenance of a safe, therapeutic, and educational environment in facilities and communities. Provide support, guidance, and structure for our detained youth by modeling, encouraging, and reinforcing pro-social behaviors to include patience, empathy, cooperation, professionalism, and respect. Supervises, guides and/or instructs the work assignments of subordinate staff. Performs as shift supervisor of a unit or program.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reports directly to the Captains of Special Operations.

  • Facilitate the deployment of the SMRT Sergeants (in conjunction with the other Lt).

  • Actively recruit and assist in conducting interviews to fill SMRT vacancies.

  • Scheduling of SMRT JCOII and SMRT Sergeants.

  • When designated serves as an (SRG) Security Risk Group or gang officer; the duties will include conducting interviews of gang affiliated youth in the community and secure facilities, monitors uprisings and gang trends, document tattoos, brandings, graffiti, contraband, gang signs and any paraphernalia associated with the furtherance of gang culture. Monitor educational, recreational, and housing unit activities, and the overall temperament of gang affiliated youth. Identify gang recruitment, provide preventative measures to minimize the influence of security risk groups, participate in rehabilitative opportunities for youth in the care of the department, provide intel and intelligence to executive staff.

  • Conduct facility and other community site visits.

  • Review and sign logbooks according to Policy 8.3 “Logbooks.”

  • Monthly meetings with Special Operations leadership.

  • Retrieve damaged or surplus equipment.

  • Ensure that reports are professional and complete.

  • Participate in succession planning by training and preparing subordinate staff.

  • Complete reports for SMRT Captains.

  • Enforces all rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and state laws necessary for the control and

  • management of offenders and the maintenance of public safety.

  • Participate in joint task force apprehensions for the recovery of absconded or exploited youth.

  • Conduct apprehensions of offenders found in violations of care and custody or protection orders Conduct secure transport of offenders.

  • Conduct shakedowns and searches of secure facilities

  • Provides safety and security for facility or community offices.

  • Maintains order, discipline, and security within assigned areas in accordance with relevant rules, regulations, policies, and laws.

  • Observe the conduct and behavior of offenders to prevent disturbances and escapes

  • Oversee offenders during work assignments, furloughs, meals, and recreation periods.  

  • Conduct patrols of assigned areas and prepare related administrative reports.

  • Prepares admissions, program releases, transfers, and other related reports.

  • Responds to emergencies in agency facilities and communities.

  • May handle or train canines for tracking, search and rescue, guard duty and the detection of contraband. Inspects, inventories physical control of logs, keys, tools, and related equipment.

  • NOTE: The position may require 24 hours on-call and extensive state-wide travel and overnight stays.

  • The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • The ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with agency staff, Human

  • Resources staff of facilities offices, and others as required.

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately.

  • Ability to exercise initiative and make independent decisions to meet deadlines or to effectively handle priority work.

  • Able to work as a positive leader, coordinator and effective team member.

  • Basic knowledge of laws affecting law enforcement officers such as use of force etc.

 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED, Georgia P.O.S.T. certification, and one (1) year of experience required at the lower-level Correctional Officer 2 (PSP223) or position equivalent.
  • Must successfully complete Leadership Core Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced within the first six months of employment. Must possess and maintain State of Georgia P.O.S.T. certification within the first six (6) months of employment.

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to applicants, who in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications possess two or more of the following:

  • Current and valid certification as a juvenile correctional officer by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council.

  • One or more years of experience in a juvenile justice environment.

  • Eighteen (18) months or more of prior military or law enforcement experience.

  • Two (2) years of college credits or an associate’s degree from an accredited university.

  • Experience in correctional security operations and/or tactical emergency response.

  • Advanced training in correctional security, tactical operations, intelligence, investigations, interviewing techniques, instructional presentations.

  • Basic computer skills to include Word, Excel, Power Point.

  • 2 or more years supervising subordinate staff.
