About this role
Overview
Macalester College’s Communications and Marketing department seeks to hire a full-time Social Media Fellow. This position implements social media strategy that supports Macalester’s digital communications efforts. The Social Media Fellow uses social media to share the stories of Macalester students, alumni, faculty, and staff; to promote college-sponsored events and programs; and to build connections between constituent groups and the college. This role monitors social media properties, tracks relevant conversations, and identifies issues needing response. The Social Media Fellow reports to the Director of Creative Services and works closely with the Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs and Assistant Vice President for Communications and Marketing on monitoring and issues.
This position is a two-year fellowship, with the possibility of extending the appointment. Preference will be given to recent graduates who have worked as a content assistant with the Communications & Marketing Department.
This position offers a weekly hybrid schedule of Tuesday through Thursday onsite and Monday and Friday as work from home days.
About The Department:
Communications and Marketing is responsible for sharing Macalester’s stories in ways that help raise the college’s profile, build community across campus, and foster connection with our alumni community.
Responsibilities
- Plans, prepares, and posts content to the college’s social media properties. Uses photography and videography to share college life, including managing our student content team to gather content. Works to ensure consistency of messaging across multiple channels and to determine appropriate messaging strategies for each channel.
- Supervises creative team student workers to identify opportunities for collaboration amongst students, cultivate content ideas, and ensure assignments are completed on-time; plans monthly professional development opportunities for all Communications & Marketing student workers via workshops and lunch-and-learns.
- Prepares social media content plans for key campus events and campaigns.
- Collaborates with college departments to ensure proper messaging and relevance for social media properties. Serves as a resource for campus colleagues regarding social media platforms, technical issues,and content planning.
- Monitors social media properties and tracks relevant comments and conversations. Practices regular social listening in spaces where key audiences are active. Identifies issues, elevates issues when appropriate, and prepares reactive responses.
- Establishes metrics, tracks social media influence measurements, and adjusts strategy based on those insights. Prepares reports to update staff on social media analytics and other insights.
- Identifies trends and applies best practices related to social media channels, management tools, and content strategy.
- This position requires occasional work outside of traditional business hours for social media posting and monitoring.
Qualifications
- At least 1 year experience managing social media properties in a higher education, non-profit, agency, or corporate role. Preference is given to recent Macalester graduates who have worked as a content assistant on the creative team for a year or more.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Solid understanding of the social media landscape. Strong knowledge of social media channels and procedures for maintaining content on social platforms.
- Ability to embrace change and rapidly adapt to emerging trends in online communications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including proofreading.
- Demonstrated experience in writing for social channels. Ability to adapt voice and style to message type and social channel.
- Ability to analyze metrics and prepare reports to track social media impact and constituent engagement in social media spaces.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across teams, and independently in a team-based work setting.
- Proven success in managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, adapting quickly to changing priorities, creative problem solving, and attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficient office technology skills.
- Experience in video editing and digital imagery desirable.
- Appreciation of the value of a liberal arts education.
- Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to work respectfully with sensitive and confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
Compensation:
The salary for this position will be between $55,651.20 to $58,180.80, depending on qualifications and experience.
