What You’ll Be Doing
The Software Engineer Apprentice will join Team ATOM, the group responsible for delivering backend services that help financial institutions detect and prevent fraudulent activity. As an apprentice, you’ll support the development of new features for the Jack Henry Intercept platform and assist in debugging and maintaining production services.
This role offers hands‑on engineering experience, ongoing mentorship from senior engineers, and meaningful work on systems that protect financial institutions and their accountholders.
This position may be worked remotely within the United States, with the exception of California.
What you’ll be responsible for
Deliver new backend features for the Jack Henry Intercept fraud‑detection product.
Assist in debugging and supporting production services, ensuring stability and reliability.
Collaborate closely with a team of four engineers and two contractors, frequently working in paired development.
Ask questions, stay curious, and actively engage with your mentor and teammates.
Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving team processes and service quality.
Take ownership of assigned tasks and follow them through to completion.
May perform other job duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need to Have
All apprentice candidates must:
Be able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
Meet all legal requirements to work in the U.S. for an indefinite period of time.
Have basic exposure to programming concepts through coursework, self‑directed learning, bootcamps, or personal projects.
Demonstrate strong motivation to learn technical skills within a structured training environment.
Show foundational familiarity with at least one modern programming language (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, Go, C#, or C++).
Possess solid problem‑solving, communication, and collaboration skills appropriate for an agile team setting.
Have a basic understanding of introductory computer science concepts (e.g., scripting, databases, or general software fundamentals).
What Would Be Nice for You to Have (Preferred Qualifications)
Experience with Node.js or TypeScript.
Ability to build or contribute to REST API services.
Experience working with relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, or Spanner.
Exposure to cloud development in GCP, AWS, or Azure.
Foundational experience in backend or object‑oriented programming.
Familiarity with version control tools such as Git/GitHub and Agile workflow tools (e.g., Jira).
Demonstrated interest in fintech, digital assets, Web3, or emerging technology trends.
