Staff Accountant

Position Description: 
The Staff Accountant supports the preparation and maintenance of financial records, assists with reporting, and helps ensure accurate financial data for the institution. This entry-level role provides hands-on experience with core accounting functions, including processing transactions, reconciling accounts, and supporting monthly and year-end close processes. The Staff Accountant works under the guidance of senior accounting staff and collaborates with departments across the University to develop a strong understanding of accounting practices and compliance requirements.

Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or related field) required; recent graduates or seniors graduating within the academic year encouraged to apply.

Essential Duties:

General Accounting and Account Reconciliation:
Assist with the preparation and posting of journal entries to the general ledger.
Support the maintenance and accuracy of the institution’s financial records.
Apply generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to daily accounting tasks with guidance from senior staff.
Assist in month-end and year-end closing process.
Prepare monthly reconciliations of balance sheet accounts for review.
Investigate and help resolve discrepancies in accounts in a timely manner.

Compliance and Audits:
Follow University financial policies, federal regulations, and state laws with guidance from senior staff.
Assist in the preparation of audit workpapers and supporting documentation.
Provide documentation and support for external audits as requested.
Maintain organized and accurate records to support compliance and audit requirements.

Other Duties:
Provide support for special financial projects or initiatives as directed by senior leadership.
Provide support to other departments with financial inquiries or documentation.
Respond to inquiries from other departments, auditors, or external agencies, as necessary.
Participate in training and professional development to stay updated on accounting standards and regulations.
Maintain a lifestyle that reflects the core values followed as outlined in the community standards and statement of faith adhered to by the University and its employees.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Qualifications:
Foundational knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Internship or part-time experience in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
Interest in higher education accounting a plus.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel; familiarity with accounting software (e.g., Banner) is a plus.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Effective communication and willingness to learn in a collaborative environment.
CPA candidate preferred.
