Staff Accountant - Norfolk, VA - Enjoy a rewarding and challenging position with a nonprofit organization that has been helping educate, train, and provide employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities since 1955. We are currently seeking an applicant for a full-time accountant who will be responsible for supporting the organization’s day-to-day accounting operations by ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records. Performs bank reconciliations and account reconciliations, processes accounts receivable invoicing, maintains daily banking activity entries, and manages petty cash. Supports regulatory compliance through preparation and filing of sales and use tax returns, personal property tax filings, and business license renewals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties and responsibilities represent the essential functions of this job that an individual must be able to perform with or without a reasonable accommodation:
- Perform general cost accounting and other related duties for the organization
- Execute daily treasury management procedures and make journal entries
- Code invoices, set up new accounts, and reconcile accounts
- Reconcile bank accounts at least monthly, verify deposits, and address inquiries from banks
- Reconcile cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts
- Verify and/or complete ACH payment of invoices associated with accounts payable
- Record ACH and credit card deposits associated with accounts receivable
- Prepare, post, verify, and record customer transactions related to accounts receivable
- Manage accounts receivable collections, to include delinquent letters and court proceedings
- Maintain knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures
- Provide outside auditors with assistance by gathering necessary account information and documents to perform annual audits
- Assist the Payroll Specialist and Human Resources Division with payroll processing as needed
- Assist Chief Financial Officer and Vice President, Accounting, with financial analysis, department requests, and special projects

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, & EXPERIENCE:
The following qualifications represent the training, education, certifications, licensures, and/or work experience required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities successfully:
- Performs general accounting and other related duties for the organization
- Assist CFO and VP with financial analysis, department requests, and special projects
- Prepares, verifies, and records customer payments and transactions related to accounts receivable
- Reviews Daily Close reports and records sales
- Perform daily Treasury management procedures and make appropriate journal entries
- Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, and reconciles assigned accounts
- Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks
- Verifies and/or completes ACH payment of invoices associated with accounts payable
- Prepares monthly sales and use tax, annual personal property taxes, and annual business licenses
- Track grant and project performance
- Provides outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audits.
- Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical demands: Performing the duties of this job requires near visual acuity, the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds, and gross manipulation. Additionally, the employee:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and occasional stooping
- Fine manipulation and keyboarding
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 15 pounds
- Must be free of tuberculosis in a communicable form
Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal, and the temperature may vary due to seasonal changes.
