About this role
Harris County, the third most populous county in the nation, provides an array of critical services to its community, including public health initiatives, disaster recovery efforts, toll road management, flood mitigation, and justice administration. The Harris County Auditor's Office plays an essential role in supporting these services by overseeing the financial operations of over 90 departments. Under the leadership of the County Auditor, the office includes the Accounting and Internal Audit divisions, ensuring integrity and efficiency in the county's fiscal management.
This is a Contract-to-Hire position, with the intent to convert to full-time based on performance and business needs.
About the Role
The Capital Asset Department is responsible for ensuring the financial integrity of the Fixed Asset System and the Financial Statements as they relate to capital assets and related expense accounts. The Staff Accountant performs accounting assignments, utilizing a high level of accounting skills and a high level of professional judgement. You'll join a small, collaborative team that values learning, consistency, and mutual support.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Capital Assets, the Staff Accountant, Capital Assets will:
- Review and approve the daily requisitions per the procedures and update as necessary.
- Communicate with departments for clarification and adjustments on requisitions if necessary.
- Complete Commissioner's Court approved transfers from Purchasing or other departments as needed.
- Add new Road Log dedication entries after the Commissioner's Court approval. Assist Road Log Group with any issues should they arise.
- Process disposals received from Purchasing after the Commissioner's Court approval and other departments when requested.
- Assist team members with any duties and research as needed.
- Other duties as required.
Essential Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field with a minimum 24 hours in accounting
- Minimum of 1 year of professional accounting experience
- Governmental accounting exposure preferred
Ideal Attributes
- Strong foundation in GAAP and GAAFR.
- Proficiency in Excel and large accounting systems (e.g., PeopleSoft).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and orally.
- Strong analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including with management across multiples departments..
- Be trustworthy and dependable.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Interest in cross-training and continuous skill development/improvement.
Work Environment
- Monday – Friday | 40 hrs./week | flexibility in start/end times within County core hours.
- Occasional extended hours during peak periods (e.g., audit season).
- Hybrid work options available based on training needs and performance.
