The Denver Fire Department is seeking a qualified candidate for the Staff Accountant position. This role performs full-performance, professional-level governmental accounting work in support of the Department’s Wildland Firefighting Program.
The position is located at Denver Fire Headquarters (745 W. Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80204) and offers flexible working hours between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. A hybrid work schedule may be available after the completion of training.
Selected candidates must successfully complete a background investigation, which includes a review of their employment and criminal history.
Established in 1866, the Denver Fire Department (DFD) provides services to the citizens who live, work, and visit the City and County of Denver providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water and high angle rescue. The Department's operating budget for 2026 is approximately $221 million.
The Department consists of five divisions: (1) Administration and Investigations, and Safety and Training (2) Fire Prevention Bureau, (3) Technical Services, (4) Suppression (Operations), and (5) Airport Fire and Rescue. The department currently has approximately 1,110 paid firefighters supporting daily fire/rescue and medical operations and 41 civilian support personnel. There are 39 fully staffed firehouses providing fire and emergency services within the city and surrounding communities of the City of Glendale, City of Sheridan, City of Englewood, and the Skyline Fire District.
Job responsibilities include:
Tracks, reviews, and processes billing and reimbursements for Wildland firefighting deployments
Processes and reconciles overtime and payroll entries related to Wildland deployments
Reviews and reconciles Wildland travel reimbursements in compliance with City and County of Denver fiscal rules and the State of Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control guidelines
Performs daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations of revenue generated by the Wildland Billing Program
Prepares financial reports for management review
Develops and maintains databases, spreadsheets, and records; analyzes data to identify discrepancies and reports findings to leadership
Provides backup support for other Fire Department finance functions
Our ideal candidate will have:
At least one (1) year of professional accounting experience, including payroll and general ledger reconciliation
Experience in governmental or nonprofit accounting preferred
Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Strong customer service and communication skills
High level of accuracy with exceptional attention to detail
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities
