Job Title: Staff Accountant I                                                  

Department: Accounting

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hours of Operation: Full Time, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week   

 

Organizational Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Supports the mission, vision and philosophy of the Bank.  Complies willingly with all organizational policies and procedures.
  2. Supports all functions that maintain compliance with regulatory agencies.

General Job Summary:

The Staff Accountant will perform a variety of analytical, research, monitoring/reconciliation, and administrative duties to support accounting operations. This position will work closely with both accounting and non-accounting personnel to meet bank objectives.

 

Some tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Prepare & record adequately supported journal entries;
  • Regularly monitor activity within assigned balance sheet accounts – directing corrective action as necessary to ensure account information is properly recorded before month-end. Formally prepare adequately supported month-end balance sheet reconciliations for a number of accounts;
  • Participate in the AP function – including reviewing and posting daily vendor payments as well as vetting and boarding new vendors;
  • Compile and distribute informational reports related to activity within select accounts as well as other internal monitoring reports;
  • The Staff Accountant will be expected to, in time & with proper training, become proficient in all critical accounting operations. Some critical operations include managing the check reconciliations system, validating imported GL data and clearing exceptions, and balancing subsidiary loan and deposit system ledgers.
  • Actively seek to maximize efficiency within assigned duties – proactively investigating opportunities for improvement via improved organizational skills, automation potential, etc.

Other Functions:

 

In addition to typical staff accountant duties, this position will also be responsible for variety of administrative tasks. Some tasks include but are not limited to:

 

  • Managing service calls for printers/technical equipment;
  • Ordering supplies as needed;
  • Coordinating special events;
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor degree in accounting, business administration or a related discipline is preferred.

Experience:     SYB has two levels of Staff Accountant based which are based on education and/or experience. Depending on a candidate’s experience, they could qualify for either a Staff I or Staff II position.

 

Staff Accountant I

Typically, a Staff Accountant 1 will have 0-2 years of work experience with a Bachelor degree from a relevant field of study. In lieu of degree, additional relevant accounting/audit/bank-specific experience will often suffice (2-4 years).

 

Staff Accountant II

Typically, a Staff Accountant II will have 3-5 years’ experience and/or possess a relevant degree or certification. Staff II duties, while similar to Staff I, tend to be more complex and require a higher level of judgment at times.

 

****Previous Bank/Credit Union experience is highly preferred.

  • Solid  research and analytical skills
  • Ability to prioritize competing projects to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to work independently and in team environment

Detail oriented, organized and able to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.

 

Specialized: Proficiency with MS Excel and Word software applications is required.

Licenses: Pursuit of an advanced degree or certification is desirable.
