About the Department

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work maintenance and repair tasks for the Town, responsible for maintenance, construction and repair of Town streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and other assignments to assist with overall department operations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARECTERISTIC:
The Streets Maintenance Worker is an entry level position in the Streets Division of Public Works. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning tasks.   The Street Maintenance Worker class is distinguished from the Equipment Operator by the performance of less than the full range of duties related to operation of medium and heavy equipment.   

Position Duties

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties

  • Performs general road maintenance and related activities including flagging traffic, mowing, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repair and pouring, clearing brush and trees, vegetation control, sweeping, routing and sealing road cracks, and removing dead animals and trash.
  • Constructs and paves roads and infrastructure; hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites; grades, waters and rolls gravel; sweeps and cleans roads as necessary; maintains infrastructure, drains and culverts.
  • Maintains truck log, completes required daily logs, reports and maintenance records; cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and heavy equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair; utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations.
  • Controls ongoing work projects to assure that safety rules and regulations are adhered to, and that the work zone and all equipment are in safe operating condition; performs tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies. 
  • Places and removes cones and traffic barricades as warning devices to secure safety at work sites, directs traffic when necessary; reports safety hazards and traffic problems; assists in cross-training work crews in proper work methods and safety procedures.
  • Trims and cuts trees and shrubbery, removes tree trunks, operates high-lift, and shreds plant debris.
  • Performs activities related to snow cleanup to include operating snowplow truck, spreading chemicals, and shoveling as assigned when necessary. 
  • Performs activities related to installation and cleaning up after special events, disasters, accidents, and other events.
  • Performs installation and repair of street signs and the layout and painting of pavement striping and marking.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess State of Arizona Driver's license; Commercial Driver’s license may be required.
  • Flagger certification for highway work zones is required within six months of hire.
Required Knowledge of:
  • Town policies and procedures.
  • Traffic laws and rules for operating vehicles and equipment in construction zones.
  • Operation, maintenance and repair standards for motorized equipment and vehicles.
  • Town safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Basic tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance.
Required Skill in:
  • Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures. 
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and motorized equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Identifying mechanical problems.
  • Following and maintaining safety standards.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers. 

Other Qualifications

High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND one year of general road construction or maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    40 hour employees earn 80 hours per year for 1 to 5 years of service
