We are seeking Emergency Room Student RN Extern, also referred to as our Emergency Room Nurse Intern, ER Nurse Extern or ER Student Extern in our Emergency Services department. The ER Student Extern plays a supportive clinical role under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and preceptors, while still in nursing school. The externship is designed to bridge classroom knowledge with real-world hospital experience—especially in the fast-paced ER environment. This position is on a per diem basis, meaning PD/PRN as needed but helps with your school schedule. 

 

Responsibilities

**The Student Extern functions as a support member of the patient care team, providing direct care under the supervision of an RN and based on skills successfully completed in their nursing program. All newly hired externs begin in a nursing assistant role, with progression to their appropriate skill level upon clearance by the Supervisor. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to): 

• Assist with obtaining and recording vital signs, performing EKGs and glucose checks, collecting specimens, and supporting basic patient care tasks throughout the emergency department 

• Support registered nurses during triage, trauma activations, and code situations by preparing equipment, monitoring patients, and ensuring efficient workflow under direct supervision 

• Observe and gain exposure to a wide range of emergency procedures including IV insertions, catheterizations, wound care, and critical care interventions alongside experienced ER registered nurses 

• Provide compassionate patient interaction by responding to call lights, assisting with hygiene, mobility, feeding, and offering emotional support to patients and their families 

• Contribute to accurate clinical documentation by recording vital signs, intake and output, and care activities in the electronic medical record according to hospital policy and supervision guidelines 

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience

1. Successfully completed the first semester of a nursing program.
2. Must be in good and academic standing.
3. Current Basic Life Support Certification.
4. Certified Nursing Assistant preferred
