Substitute BUS ASSISTANT

Department: Transportation

Pay: $13.50 per hour

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position performs responsible human support work assisting with the transportation of pupils with special transportation needs to and from school. Work is performed under immediate supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Provides help to the school bus driver and secures passengers in their seats. 

• Assists students on and off buses.

• Ensures that all student passengers, including those in wheelchairs and braces, are properly secured in their assigned seats or wheelchair slot.

• Assists drivers in ensuring all pupils are off the bus immediately following each run.

• Assists in controlling student behavior.

• Tends to the special needs and conditions of each student.

• Learn bus routes, schedules, and pickup points.

• Assists substitute drivers with directions.

• Keeps abreast of route and bus stop changes and student day care arrangements.

• Assists drivers in conducting bus evacuation drills.

• Assists drivers in maintaining a clean bus interior.

• Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.

• Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of the transportation of students. 

• Knowledge of transporting handicapped students. 

• Ability to assist students with patience and understanding. 

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, associates, and students.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and hazards.  

• The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

• This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

• Work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, and observing general surroundings and activities.
