Job Summary:
Oversees and monitors the day-to-day phlebotomy activities including performing, educating and overseeing all functions within the laboratory not limited to scheduling, specimen collection, labeling, receipt, processing, delivery and archiving for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease to conduct medical laboratory testing. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Required
- Master's Degree: Preferred
- Five years' phlebotomy experience: Preferred
- Laboratory operations experience: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HI
- NHA Certified Phlebotomy Tech (CPT-NHA) or Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII) or Phlebotomy Tech-NCCT (NCCT-CPT): Required
Essential Functions:
- Oversees operations and procedures necessary to obtain blood specimens, verifies specimen identification and appropriateness of sample type/volume for the indicated testing. Develops department procedures that are clearly written, cost effective and reviews them annually in accordance to center requirements. Assists laboratory Director in scheduling staffing of phlebotomist and receptionists. Assists staff in interpreting orders and handling other problems that may arise.
- Submits periodic written evaluation of department personnel with the objective of improving and strengthening each employee’s overall performance completed in timely manner. Is responsible for department staffing process, including hiring, termination transfers, promotions, and wage and salary adjustments in accordance with center's policies and procedures.
- Monitors equipment as needed per regulations, interfacing with clinical engineering and technical consultant when appropriate. Ensures staff follows established guidelines for missed collections, recollects, and difficult phlebotomies. Oversees ordering of supplies, ensuring procedures are followed.
- Supervises the recording of all statistical information. Maintains updated files, documentation safety, preventive maintenance, etc. Provides orientation and training for staff to ensure comprehension of company policies and procedures. Monitors staff and ensures proficiency testing per regulatory agency procedures and documented according to established guidelines.
- Oversees staff runs quality controls daily as needed as well as other required testing. Maintains up to date department policies and procedures for testing and equipment. Implements departmental quality controls and quality assurance programs. Follows written procedures when collecting, processing and preserving specimens to maintain specimen integrity. Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.
