UChicago Medicine is an integrated academic and community health system with multiple primary medical facilities within the surrounding suburbs of Chicago and Northwest Indiana. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity
Surgical Technologist III is involved in process improvement or quality initiatives within Perioperative Services. This position also assists the nursing and medical staff in providing care to patients undergoing surgical intervention and performance of surgical scrub technologist duties; collaborates with nursing and other disciplines, when necessary, to revise the care plan to meet the changing needs of the patient. Has constant contact with the Operating Room staff, physicians, clerical staff, anesthesia staff and materials management.
Essential Job Functions
Clinical Practice
- Independently scrub open, laparoscopic, and robotic procedures across multiple specialties (including trauma, thoracic, vascular, orthopedics, general surgery, gynecology, urology, ENT, plastics, and colorectal)
- Apply advanced surgical technique knowledge in routine, emergency, and trauma situations
- Maintain strict aseptic techniques and infection control practices
- Accurately perform counts, handle specimens, manage medications and implants, and monitor sterile fields
- Properly operate, troubleshoot, and assist with surgical and video equipment
- Ensure appropriate handling, care, and reprocessing of surgical instrumentation
- Meet quality and safety standards, including SCIP measures
Case Preparation & Resource Management
- Prepare OR suites and case carts according to surgeon preference cards, policies, and standards of care
- Collaborate with leadership and CSP to ensure accurate room setup and instrument availability
- Utilize supplies and equipment in a cost‑effective manner
- Inventory, restock, and maintain OR and specialty service supplies
- Review and update surgeon preference cards
Education & Leadership
- Serve as a mentor, preceptor, and role model for staff, students, and orientees
- Assist with staff orientation and ongoing competency development
- Collaborating with Perioperative Educators to develop and deliver continuing education
- Provide unit‑based in‑services at least bi‑annually
- Actively participate in departmental or medical center committees
- Promote a positive work environment and support change initiatives
Communication & Patient Flow
- Communicate effectively during shift handoffs
- Act as a resource to physicians, staff, patients, and visitors
- Collaborate with scheduling, anesthesia, and perioperative leadership to support accurate OR scheduling
- Assist with efficient room turnover and case setup
Central Sterile Processing Liaison
- Serve as a liaison between the OR and CSP to ensure specialty instrumentation readiness and quality
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
- Minimum Five years of Operating Room experience required
- Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Certification as a CST from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (must obtain within 12 months of hire)
Physically capable of performing repetitive and demanding tasks, including standing for long periods and wearing 10–25 lb. lead aprons

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
