Position Summary

A Transmission Grid Controller at Oncor will have a basic understanding of electrical theory or power system operations, experience or knowledge of switching and tagging procedures and experience operating power system equipment. The candidate must be capable of acquiring an in-depth working knowledge of power system and operational fundamentals through self study and classroom training. The candidate must obtain Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and North America Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) certifications and successfully complete designated classroom training provided through Oncor Training Program.

Key Roles & Responsibilities for Transmission Grid Controller Associate

Other duties may be assigned.  Directly or through others, the incumbent:

  • Within one year from employment successfully obtain ERCOT Certification (if not already certified).
  • Within one year from employment obtain one of the following NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Certifications: 
    • Reliability Coordinator 
    • Transmission Operator or, 
    • Balancing, Interchange and Transmission.
  • Successfully complete a designated portion of the Oncor training program.
  • Meet expectation for gaining a working knowledge of power system operations.
  • Successfully complete NERC CIP training and background check.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of Section 6 of the Oncor Transmission Safety Handbook.

 

Key Roles & Responsibilities for Transmission Grid Controller

Other duties may be assigned. Directly or through others, the incumbent:

  • Within one year from employment successfully obtain ERCOT Certification (if not already certified).
  • Will have thorough understanding of  Oncor operating procedures.
  • Will successfully demonstrate through simulation operational skills and knowledge learned throughout the training based on Oncor operating procedures.
  • Perform real time control room switching under the supervision of a Senior Transmission Grid (TG) Controller during training period.
  • Effectively communicate information to other transmission entities, ERCOT and distribution under the supervision on a Senior TG Controller during training period.
  • At the completion of the Oncor Training Program, must show proficiency in all areas of system operations.
  • Must be capable of obtaining ERCOT Certification and progressing to Senior TG Controller.
  • Successfully complete NERC CIP training and background check.
  • Capable of understanding and adhering to Section 6 of the Oncor Transmission Safety Handbook.

 

    Skills for both roles

    • Ability to learn power system operations.
    • Analytical thinking skills.

    Education and Experience for both roles

    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
    • Associate degree in electric power technology or equivalent work experience is required.
    • Basic knowledge of power system facilities.
    • Applicants that have completed a Navy Nuclear type program encouraged to apply.

    In addition to the above, the Associate:

    • Must obtain ERCOT and NERC certification within one year from employment.

    In addition to the above, the Controller:

    • Must Currently have one of the following NERC Certifications:
      • Reliability Coordinator
      • Transmission Operator or,
      • Balancing, Interchange and Transmission.

     

    Measures of Success for Transmission Grid Controller Associate

    • Obtained required certifications within the designated time frame.
    • Successfully completed a designated portion of the Oncor Training Program. 
    • Demonstrate effective and clear verbal and written communication
    • Obtained a thorough understanding of Section 6 of the Oncor Transmission Safety Handbook.
    • Exhibits the capability of acquiring in-depth operational knowledge.

    Measures of Success for Transmission Grid Controller

    • Maintain and obtain required certifications.
    • Completes simulation exercises in a acceptable manner.
    • Perform adequately under the supervision of a Senior TG Controller.
    • Effectively communicates internally and with other entities.
    • Successfully completed the Oncor Training Program.
    • Exhibits a thorough understanding of Section 6 of the Oncor Transmission Safety Handbook.
    • Exhibits the capability of acquiring in-depth operational knowledge.
