About this role

About the Department

At the Office of Materials and Research (OMR), acts as a resource for construction personnel on full depth reclamation, chemically stabilized road construction materials, and cement modified subbases.  Reviews mix designs and Quality Control Plans related to these materials.  Monitors process of current projects utilizing these materials. Investigates problems of moderate complexity related to roadway stabilization. Assists construction personnel with solving problems related to reclamation. 

Performs Pavement analysis and develops strategies of moderate complexity on new and existing pavements using the Department’s pavement design procedures for pavement design and investigation.

Reviews and prepares specifications related to reclamation and chemical stabilization of road construction materials. Serves as chair or member of Quality Improvement Committee for Pavement Recycling.  Coordinates with the Geotechnical Materials Engineer to develop or modify test procedures related to chemically stabilized construction materials. 

Conducts, coordinates, or acts as principal investigator on SPR research projects and/or in-house research projects of moderate complexity related to chemically stabilized road construction materials or other related technical areas.

Assists with training Department, Consultant, and Contractor personnel on construction techniques, specifications, and quality control of chemically stabilized bases and subbases. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Duties

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering and three (3) years of engineering work experience. Necessary Special Requirement: Registration as a Professional Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
