About the Department
Performs duties as a certified inspector and maintains SCDOT/SCDHEC/ACI Certifications in the following: SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician, SCDOT Earthwork, Drainage & Base Inspector, SCDOT Concrete Field Technician & ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician-Grade I, SCDHEC Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Inspector. Thoroughly documents daily construction-related activities and accurately measures, calculates and records quantities of installed contract pay items in the field and enters the information into AASHTOWare Project daily work reports for accurate contractor payment. Takes samples and performs various field tests of construction materials for compliance with applicable specifications. Ensures that materials are sampled and tested at required frequency and manufacturer certifications are obtained prior to the installation or use of engineered construction materials, products, and devices. Enters sampling data into AASHTOWare Projects and Sample Log and tracks until results are received. Prepares all necessary construction reports and maintains construction records until completion of each assigned project. Monitors work zones on assigned projects as a certified Work Zone inspector to ensure traffic control devices are placed according to SCDOT and MUTCD standards and according to contract documents and plans. Notifies the contractor promptly of traffic control deficiencies and/or safety issues, and ensures deficiencies are corrected immediately. Notifies the Resident Construction Engineer of any areas of concern not corrected by the contractor. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Duties
A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
