About this role

About the Department

The Transportation Worker 1 Laborer will report to the District 8 Sign Shop which serves Pendleton, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker counties. This position, under close supervision, the employee in this class assists with entry level work maintaining and repairing roadway signs. Key responsibilities include receiving and executing work orders for daily tasks, equipment, and materials. The worker assists with installing and repairing signs on breakaway supports according to state standards and specifications. The employee must follow all traffic control and worksite safety procedures, assist with monitoring material inventories, report material usage and needs to the supervisor, and report on the status of work performed to the crew supervisor. Performs other related duties as required. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. 

  • The selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of a Laborer, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not required. 
    However, advancement through the apprenticeship program is limited without a CDL or other required certifications.
  • Pay Grade 10H
    Tier 1 hourly rate: $16.3538

Position Duties

  • Assist higher level Transportation Workers in the maintenance of roads and facilities.
  • Wash equipment was brought in for repair.
  • Flags traffic at construction sites.

  • Clean buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools.
  • Remove debris and litter from culverts and highways.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not required. However, advancement through the apprenticeship program is limited without a CDL or other required certifications.  

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of general safety procedures.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

• No formal education required.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE 
• This is the entry-level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.
